March : A New Breed Of Watercraft. |
A new brand of personal
watercraft emerges as the Silveira Group announces the launch of the
Samba XRS, a carbon fiber ultra maneuverable PWC.
Founded by Rod Silveira and
Kristen Merck, this American company has developed a unique watercraft
designed to give the rider a great range of maneuverability on an
ergonomic semi-prone riding position, similar to that of a sport
bike.
The Samba XRS is built super
light, utilizing the same carbon fiber production techniques used in
the Aviation and Racing industries to produce a hull that weighs only
34 lbs.
Powered by a 110 HP, 4 stroke
engine, the Samba XRS is one of the fastest personal watercrafts
commercially available.
This new hull design lowers
the rider’s center of gravity, allowing beginners to perform tricks
without any prior experience.
“In a world of Big and
Bigger pwcs, we felt the need to respond to a long awaited need for a
more intuitive and responsive way of riding a personal watercraft”,
says Silveira.
The company is expected to
showcase and electric model in July of 2010.

March : World's First Plastic Anchor For Small
Watercraft. |
Most small watercraft need
anchors just like bigger boats, but many down-sized anchors struggle
to hold these vessels in place, even breaking apart.
If you ride a personal
watercraft (PWC), like a Jet Ski, stowing a metal or aluminum anchor
in the craft’s onboard storage containers can wreak havoc, sometimes
almost punching through in rough conditions. That’s no good aboard
an inflatable, either.
Australian-based Cooper
Anchors has designed a world-first lightweight, plastic anchor with a
weighted tip, straight streamline shank and small blade that work
harmoniously to drive deep into the sea bed and hold your craft in
place.
What’s more, it’s
flexible, tough, won’t scratch or puncture your PWC or inflatable
and weighs less than 1kg.
The nylon-made Plastic Cooper
Anchor is easily transported and stored on just about every
watercraft.
Its makers say it outperforms
other small steel and aluminum anchors currently available.
It also has a design function
that lets it release easily if caught on a reef, protecting the marine
environment from damage.
The inventors say the holding
power of any anchor is directly related to how deeply it sets and
holds the seabed.
That’s why they’ve
designed their plastic anchor to burrow deeply and quickly.
And the small area between
the shank and the tip allow Cooper anchors to change direction with
less effort, especially during anchor retrieval.
A specially-designed small
blade on the shank of the anchor removes any chance of it rolling on
to its back and sliding aimlessly along the sea floor.
This new balance point causes
the anchor to roll onto its tip and set immediately.
The small blade also
increases holding power and stabilizes the angle of attack as the
anchor buries because the small blade and the main blade are at the
same angle and support each other.
Less damage to the
environment
When fishing over reefs, the
shackle attaching the anchor to the chain can be moved to an
additional hole in the base of the shank, and a cable tie inserted
through the top hole and chain to hold the anchor at the correct
angle.
If the anchor does become
stuck, the cable tie breaks and the anchor releases backwards without
damaging the reef.
Designed and manufactured by
father and sons team, Larry, Jon and Grant Cooper, the anchor has been
field tested for more than 12 months and has appeared on Australia’s
New Inventors TV show.
Larry Cooper says that
although PWCs may seem small, they still weigh between 300-500kg, so
they need a properly functioning anchor to keep them in place.
He says most one-piece
anchors use either a long curved shank or a roll bar to assist in
rolling the anchor off its back, which only adds more weight and
resistance to an anchor’s movement.
The Plastic
Cooper Anchor overcomes rolling with the addition of a small blade
at the bottom of the anchor that removes the possibility of it staying
on its back by creating a new balance point.
It is also said to increase
the anchor’s holding power by more than 15 percent.
The Plastic Cooper Anchor
sells online for AUD34.95 (£20 approx) and is suitable for most
watercraft up to 3.5m (12ft).

March : Jetskier Rescued Off Standswood Bay In The
Solent. |
By
Melanie Adams
A stranded jetskier had to be
rescued from the Solent this morning.
The man, in his forties, was
trying to tow his broken down jetski to the beach at Standswood Bay
but began to struggle as exhaustion and hypothermia set it.
The RNLI Calshot's inshore
lifeboat was launched and the crew was able to pluck him from the
water and take him to the shore.
He received first aid
treatment back at the lifeboat station before being taken to
Southampton General Hospital.
Inshore lifeboat helmsman
Mark Laughlin said:
"This gentleman was very
lucky that we were able to reach him so quickly, as he had already
been in the water for 20 minutes.
Much longer and the outcome
could have been very different."

March : Adventurers Plan To Jetski From London To
Auckland. |
A group of adventurers
planning a world record jetski ride from England to New Zealand to
raise money for cancer research have hit a stumbling block with the
Port of London Authority.
Organisers of the 20,000-mile
(32,000km) world record attempt, dubbed The Ultimate Ride, plan to set
off from London on the Thames River in August before heading across
the North Sea to Holland.
They will then ride their
personal watercraft through 15 cities before reaching Auckland on New
Zealand’s North Island an estimated 120 days later.
The team will be led by
Jeremy Burfoot, a Qantas pilot from Auckland who was the first to
circumnavigate New Zealand on a jet-ski in 2006.
Mr Burfoot, 50, said the team
of six had planned to start their 18,000 nautical mile journey on the
Thames alongside Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster to gain maximum
exposure for their cause, but they have not been given permission.
“The London Port Authority
have said that jetskis are not allowed on the Thames,” Mr Burfoot
told The Times. “So we’ve got someone in London looking
into it, but if they say no we’ll just have to start further down
the river.”
Mr Burfoot, who was diagnosed
with a melanoma in 2005, said he wants to complete The Ultimate Ride
to promote cancer awareness.
He came up with the idea
while he was piloting a jet and decided the course should follow the
London-Sydney airline route, but on water and with an extra leg to
Auckland thrown in.
Three jetskis will follow the
route, with a catamaran riding behind as a support boat.
The team will stick mainly to
the coastlines as they travel more than halfway around the globe on
jetskis, for up to eight hours a day.
"We're tackling one of
the world's most iconic routes; the London-to-Sydney journey has been
made famous by all kinds of intrepid travellers, though none have
tried it on a personal watercraft," Mr Burfoot said.
Mr Burfoot, who has been
riding jetskis for ten years, said that the team had begun training.
The team will pass through 15
cities on their way to Auckland, including Frankfurt, Belgrade,
Istanbul, Cairo and Mumbai.
They will also travel along
12 waterways, including the Rhine River, the Black Sea, the Suez Canal
and the Great Barrier Reef.
Their route takes them
through Europe to Turkey, past Greece, along the west coast of the Red
Sea and into the Gulf of Aden at Yemen.
The team will then be given a
naval escort as they travel through pirate hotspots off Somalia.
They plan to reach Auckland
by November.
