October : Sunderland Lifeboat Recovers
Riderless Jet Ski. |
By Andrew Douglas
A lifeboat was launched this
afternoon after an unmanned jet ski was spotted still under power
about half a mile north of Roker Pier, Sunderland.
Volunteers from Sunderland
RNLI were alerted after staff at Sunderland Coastwatch reported the
riderless machine heading towards the open sea shortly before 2pm.
As the Atlantic 85 Inshore
lifeboat “Wolseley” was launched, Coastguards arrived at Roker
beach and found the rider - a 39-year-old man from Brierley Hill, West
Midlands - who had managed to swim ashore.
Jon Pollock, Lifeboat Crew at
Sunderland RNLI Station said:
“The rider explained to the
Coastguard that he had fallen from his ski; but the safety kill cord
did not operate correctly.
"This caused the ski to
continue running heading into the open sea.”
After several attempts the
lifeboat Helmsman skilfully managed to steer the lifeboat close enough
to the moving jet ski to allow a line to be attached and the engine
stopped.
The unmanned jet ski was then
taken in tow and taken to Sand Point slipway where it was recovered
from the water onto the rider’s trailer.
Mr Pollock said:
“This incident highlights
the importance of a fully operational kill cord being onboard
watercraft. In this case it was being correctly worn, but failed to
operate due to a stiff mechanism.
"The RNLI recommend that
before any watercrafts which are equipped with a kill cord are taken
to sea, the operator should deliberately operate the kill cord to
confirm it is operating correctly.”

October : Nikon Photographer Arrest Threat Over Jet Ski Drama. |
Report by Chris Cheesman
Police banned a photographer
from taking pictures of people on a jet ski and threatened to arrest
him despite an officer admitting the images he had taken were
perfectly lawful.
Keen photographer Garry
Chinchen was left stunned when police threatened to arrest him
yesterday for 'breach of the peace'.
Garry, who was using a Nikon
D200 and 17-200mm lens, said his photo session had turned into a 'bit
of a disaster'.
Garry had stopped in a lay-by
after seeing a picture opportunity at Glyn Neath Lakes - a watersports
centre adjacent to the A465 in South Wales.
He said he had been taking
photos from a public area for 'ten minutes' when a man claiming to be
the lake's landowner approached.
'A guy came over and
said "stop photographing the children,"' said Garry. 'He
said you need permission to take photographs of children.'
The photos sent to Amateur
Photographer (AP), clearly taken from a distance, show a man and
a boy on the back of a jet ski, both dressed in wetsuits.
The man then complained to
police who arrived shortly afterwards.
'They checked the images on
the camera. They were fine. He [the officer] then phoned my employer.'
Police had demanded
identification and asked for details of Garry's employers, a nearby
foster carer agency.
Officers also ran his name
through a police computer database.
'Everything checked out
fine,' said Garry who had taken the pictures for his own portfolio and
said he did not plan to publish any of them.
The officer then told Garry:
'If you take another picture you will be arrested for, at the least,
breach of the peace [under the Public Order Act].'
AP understands that concerns
had been raised because there were children changing, into wetsuits,
near the lake which is used for 'youth engagement activity'.
However, Garry told us that
he was not aware of children changing nearby. He said he could only
see the lake and the treeline from where he was standing.
Garry added that, at the
time, this matter had not been raised by the landowner, or the police
officer who was called to the scene.
None of the images that Garry
showed to police contain children changing.
At the time of writing, South
Wales Police had yet to clarify whether the officer had communicated
the exact nature of the landowner's concern to the photographer.
They deny that the officer
had overreacted.
'Inflammatory behaviour'
We understand, from a source
close to the case, that had Garry been allowed to continue taking
pictures this would have been viewed as 'inflammatory behaviour'
against the complainant.
In an official statement, a
South Wales Police spokesman said:
'We were called by the
landowner of Glyneath lakes [sic] following concern of a photographer
taking photos of a child on a jet ski.
'The officer carried out all
the necessary checks on this person and no offences were disclosed.
The photographer was appropriately advised regarding his conduct.'
Garry now fears he will be
arrested if he is seen taking any more pictures in public.
'You can't take a picture of
anything really,' he told us. 'It was very confusing and quite
worrying.'
To add insult to injury,
Garry said he later received a call from his employer who was
concerned having been contacted by police earlier in the day.
A police source claimed that
Garry had been 'very argumentative and defensive in providing his
details'.
Glyn Neath Lakes had yet to
respond to our request for comment at the time of writing.

October : In Limbo. |
By Claire Lewis
A Jet ski ace who disappeared
at sea 12 months ago may not be officially declared dead for another
six years - leaving his heartbroken family struggling to survive.
Jeremy Hoyland, an experienced and world-renowned jet-skier from Penistone,
Barnsley, vanished off the coast of Bali one year ago today and has
not been seen since.
No remains have been found,
no clothing has been located, and no jet ski has ever been recovered -
leaving his devastated wife and two children in limbo.
Although police in Bali
stopped searching for Jeremy, then aged 41, and closed their case in
February after four months, authorities on the Indonesian holiday
island have refused to release an official death certificate.
His wife Jacquii, 45, has
been told she can apply for the paperwork after he has been missing
for a year but there is no guarantee a certificate will be granted.
She may have to wait a full
seven years from the date of her husband's disappearance before he can
be officially declared dead under British law.
Jacquii, who works as a
project manager for a national high street chain, is unable to touch
any of her husband's bank accounts or insurance policies without an
official death certificate, plunging her and her daughters into
financial misery.
Today Jacquii told The
Star:
"I can't begin to
explain how difficult it has been since Jeremy went missing - aside
from the emotional pain, without a death certificate I can't do
anything.
"Even shopping around
for a better mortgage when our fixed deal ran out was impossible
because it is in joint names, so I have ended up paying an extra £350
a month in interest payments even though there is only one salary now.
"It is a battle but I am
working all the hours possible just to keep a roof over our
heads."
She described the last 12
months of her life as "horrendous". Three months ago she
lost her mother too.
Her daughters Ellena, 14, and
Georgia, 13, are still struggling to come to terms with the loss of
their father and have been struggling to decide how to mark the
anniversary.
"Because we don't know
what happened, because we haven't been able to hold a funeral, the
girls don't feel like they can move on," Jacquii said.
"We have discussed
placing some flowers in the sea, sending a message in a bottle to
their father, and even burying a time capsule, but they don't feel
that any of those options are what they want to do.
"I think it will just be
a day we spend together remembering him and all our happier times
together.
"I look at his
photograph every day and ask him where he is - the not knowing is
unbearable.
I just wish something would
turn up, something to give me some proof, so we could at least begin
to accept things and look forward."
Jeremy had been invited to
Bali for the Asian Beach Games as a guest of the organisers when he
disappeared.
He was on a recreational jet
ski trip with friends, bringing up the rear of a pack, when he ran
into difficulties with nobody in front of him aware of the drama
unfolding behind them.
Jeremy's mobile phone records
show he made a number of calls to raise the alarm before going
missing.

October : Lifeboat Training Exercise
Tests Crew's Skills. |
Aggressive patients, sinking
ships and cramped conditions faced lifeboat crews on Sunday.
Luckily the disaster in the
Thames Estuary was a training exercise for the volunteer crews from
Whitstable and the four casualties, faking injuries from a heart
attack to broken leg, were paramedics helping to make it realistic.
The scenario was devised by
medical officer Dr Terry Stefani and involved a diabetic jet skier who
lost control of his craft and crashed into a dinghy from the sailing
barge Greta, causing both to sink.
It was based on a real
incident earlier this year when an unmanned jet ski was out of control
in the estuary.
All the casualties were
hauled on board the Greta and three teams of lifeboat crewmembers were
tested on their first aid and seamanship skills for the Dan Davies
trophy, in memory of the station's first medical officer.
Dr Stefani said: "This
was a very difficult scenario and the three crews handled the
situation very well.
A jet ski is an extremely
dangerous weapon if not handled correctly as was highlighted earlier
this year and it was fortunate that on that occasion there was not a
collision between the jet ski, other craft or people in the water or
at the water's edge."
The Dan Davies trophy was
presented to Craig Sidders' team and the Kit Davies award, for the
best individual performance, was awarded to Rob Nichols.
He said: "I enjoyed the
whole experience and I just stuck to what I had been taught on the
first aid courses.
For my team, I was the first
to go onboard the barge and thought I did well with some aspects of
the exercise but struggled with others and I am really surprised to
have picked up an award."
The crews were: Helmsman Alex
Stevens with Kellie Litchfield and John Skinner; Helmsman Craig
Sidders with Martin Easton and Henry Thomson and Helmsman Richard
Judge with Rob Nichols and Mike Keam.

October : Race Crash Leaves One
Dead At IJSBA World Finals. |
By David
Bell
A rider for Team Serbia was
killed in a three-boat collision during racing at the International
Jet Sports Boat Association Personal Watercraft World Finals at Crazy
Horse Beach Friday.
Mohave County Sheriff’s
Office is investigating the fatality, and Sgt. Doug Schuster said his
agency “is treating this like any other collision” on the Lake.
Because the World Finals are
a U.S. Coast Guard-sanctioned event, the Coast Guard is conducting the
incident investigation.
One of the other racers
involved in the collision suffered minor injuries, and the third was
uninjured.
The crash occurred in the
Amateur Runabout Limited Class, the second race after the lunch break,
just after 2 p.m.
The boats collided coming out
of the final turn and into the front stretch near the official’s
tower and in front of the viewing stands on the beach.
K38 Rescue team members
pulled the victims from the water and onsite paramedics performed CPR
until the victim was transported by River Medical Ambulance to the
Havasu Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigating officials have
not yet released the name of the victims but Veljko Sukalo, president
of Jet Ski Savez Srbije (Team Serbia) said the racer who died was
Cesare Visrara, an Italian national that had raced with Team Serbia
for the past three years and was due to receive his Serbian
citizenship next week.
Sukalo, through an
interpreter, called Visrara “the best driver in the world and the
best on the Serbian Team” and said his team would continue racing in
his honor.
“When everybody leaves for
a race, if God decides to take someone, it’s almost a rule that he
takes the best,” Sukalo said.
“His life was driving Jet
Skis and he raced under the Serbian flag with (pride). He got great
results under the Serbian flag.”
Scott Frazier, executive
director for the IJSBA, said in a prepared statement that racing
Friday was cancelled following the crash.
“We are deeply grieved by
this horrible accident and in consultation with the other competitors
at the event, postponed all racing until Saturday morning.
This was the first time in
the nearly three decades of this event that we have had an incident
like this one,” Frazier said.
“Our thoughts and prayers
are extended to the Visrara family and all of his friends here at the
event.”
On Tuesday, following the
first day of racing, Visrara told Today’s News-Herald he “felt
good” on the waters of Lake Havasu, though he found the conditions
“a little rough.”
Sukalo said he is working
with race officials to develop two races in Visrara’s memory – one
in Serbia and the other in Lake Havasu City.
“He loved Lake Havasu. He
loved America,” Sukalo said. “Forever, 365 days a year, 24/7 he
will be with us. We will never forget him.”

Vismara Cesare’s personal

October : UK’s Barsby Takes 2 At
IJSBA World Finals. |
By David
Bell
Multiple world champion Lisa
Barsby is a familiar name to personal watercraft racing fans. Now
it’s a name on the lips of the male competition too.
Barsby defeated the men in a
pair of finals Wednesday to take two world titles at the International
Jet Sports Boating Association Personal Watercraft World Finals at
Crazy Horse Beach.
Barsby took the win in the
Master Ski Stock division in the morning then rode to a world title in
the Veteran Limited class in the afternoon.
“It was different for me
today. I just didn’t have the nerves,” she said.
“I talk to the younger
girls and they still get nervous. But I’ve raced long enough now
that if I win, it’s great. But it’s no longer the be-all or
end-all.”
Barsby is also the PWC racing
event organizer in the United Kingdom, which doesn’t give her a
great deal of time to get back on the ski.
At the World Finals though,
that’s a different story.
“It’s nice to come here
and just ride. We’re here for holiday for a few weeks,” she said.
“We love coming here,
it’s a great place to ride. We’ve been coming since 1991.”
Drew Roush, of West Virginia,
is another world champion following Wednesday’s action. He took
first in Amateur Runabout 800 Limited racing in one of the wildest
finishes of the day.
Going into the final lap of
the race Roush was ahead of Havasu’s Brandon McMillan when, for the
second day in a row, McMillan’s PWC conked out.
Undaunted by his mechanical
issues, the former world champion McMillan celebrated Roush’s win
after the race.
“That felt pretty god,”
said Roush. “On the water is was a little choppy. I didn’t expect
the waves coming in at the turns.”
Roush also finished ahead of
the riders from Thailand, a group he calls his “top competition.
They are fast. But I’ve been training hard and I do the best I
can.”

October : Alert
After Jet Ski Sighting. |
A worried member of the
public called for help after they spotted a jet ski floating in
Sunderland Harbour.
The water sports vehicle had
not moved for 45 minutes and the person was concerned its rider had
got into difficulty.
RNLI volunteers began a
search of the water between the South and Roker Pier, shortly after
6pm yesterday.
Crewman Anthony Jobling said
the search was difficult because of fading light, so they asked for
the D-Class lifeboat to be launched.
After about an hour
coastguards were told by the Marina Activity Centre, using their CCTV,
that no jet ski had been spotted in area recently.
The River Wear was also
searched to rule out a jet ski being launched from slipways further up
the river.
Fishermen in the area
confirmed no sightings around Sunderland Harbour that afternoon or
evening and the search was terminated.
But Mr Jobling said: "We
would like to thank the member of the public who took the time to
report his concerns to the Marina Office."

October : Rescue
Hovercraft
Called To Jet Skier Stranded On Weston Mudflats. |
One of Burnham-On-Sea's
rescue hovercrafts was called to Weston on Saturday afternoon (October
10th) after Coastguards reported a jet skier in difficulty on the
mudflats.
The man, from South Wales,
had skied across the Bristol Channel from Porthcawl to watch Weston's
annual motorbike beach races.
But he misjudged the falling
tide and became stranded on the mudflats a quarter of a mile from the
shore, prompting Coastguards to request the help of Burnham-based
rescue charity BARB.
The Light of Elizabeth
hovercraft was taken by road to Weston and launched from the beach
next to the Grand Pier at 4pm.
BARB Deputy Operations
Manager Graham Hallsworth said:
"The jet skier had been
stuck in the mud for several minutes after trying unsuccessfully to
get his jet ski back into the sea. Fortunately, he was released
unhurt."
"Once his safety was
confirmed, BARB flew two Weston Coastguard officers out to the
stranded jet ski to investigate whether it could be pulled to the sea
so the man could make his return journey to Wales, but this was not
possible."
The jet skier had to wait
several hours for the tide to come in on Saturday evening when he was
escorted back across the channel by a Weston lifeboat.
A second jet skier, who also
travelled across the channel from Wales, made his way safely back
earlier in the day.

“The Institute has really
helped me over the past few months, knowing they are 100% behind me
has definitely improved my existing skills and given me the drive to
practise on a more regular basis.
"I spend a lot of time
in the gym as you need a lot of strength, flexibility and
co-ordination for when you are doing stunts which include back flips
and barrel rolls."
Luke is now looking to
compete in next years British Championship with the intention of
progressing on to the World Championships in Arizona, USA.

October : 6ins Water ‘Too Risky’ For Paramedics. |
By John Coles and Andy Whelan
A man laying in six inches of
water with a broken back was refused help by a paramedic - over health
and safety rules.
The jobsworth insisted
colleagues were trained only for land emergencies.
Bystanders floating
dad-of-three Brian Bendle in the ankle-deep water had to slide a
spinal board under him themselves and carry him to ambulancemen just
6ft away.
Brian, 45, had been injured
waiting to take a jetski out on a lake at a water park. Another jetski
hit him at 50mph.
One onlooker said: "The
paramedic wouldn't treat him.
Two colleagues arrived in an
ambulance but he stood in their way and told them, 'I'm incident
commander - you aren't getting into the water.'
"The ambulancemen were
pleading with him. I reckon a good ten or more minutes were
wasted."
Steve Cox, 47 - who runs
Middlemoor Water Park in Woolavington, Somerset - said:
"The first bloke
insisted they had to wait for the fire brigade. He kept saying,
'Health and safety won't let me get in.'"
Brian, from Bristol, is now
in intensive care in Taunton.
An ambulance service
spokesman said fire crews were trained for water rescues and added:
"The incident was managed in accordance with procedures."
In August, heart attack
victim Melissa Proctor-Blain, 32, died after a paramedic feared it was
unsafe to enter a pub in Spondon, Derbys.
Last year Karl Malton, 32, of
Crowland, Lincs, drowned in 18ins of water while 999 crews waited for
a water rescue team 50 miles away.

October : Music In Memory Of Tragic Michael. |
By James Johnston
Friends of jet ski crash
victim Michael Scott are to hold a music night in his memory.
The 22-year-old, who died in
hospital after he was pulled from the River Wear at South Hylton, was
laid to rest last week when hundreds of mourners packed into the
city's St Mary's and St Peter's Church to pay their respects to the
popular lad.
Now friend Adam Penman, of
Thorney Close, is helping to organise a special DJ night featuring
Michael's favourite House music.
All money raised during the
event this month at a city-centre pub will be donated to Michael's
family.
"We really wanted to
organise something like this as a tribute to Michael," said Adam.
"We've got a page set up
on Facebook and we've already had about 500 confirmed guests.
Michael was a really popular
lad, everybody seemed to know him.
"I'd known him since I
was a kid. We went to school together and used to hang around
together. He'll be missed by a lot of people."
Michael, from Springwell,
Sunderland, died on September 20 after falling from his jet ski into
the River Wear.
The former pupil at Sandhill
View School, who worked in the construction industry, was pulled from
the water by two friends, Steve Stewart and Paul Wilson and given
emergency treatment at the scene of the accident near Claxheugh Rock.
He was taken by paramedics to
Sunderland Royal Hospital, where he later died.
Adam, 20, said Michael was a
huge music fan.
"We all thought a night
like this would be a fitting tribute to him," he added.
The music night is for
over-18s only and will take place at The Continental pub, in John
Street, Sunderland, on Friday, from 8pm to 3am.
Tickets are available on the
door, priced £5, and all proceeds will go to Michael's family.

October : Jet-Ski Investigation Nears Its Conclusion. |
An Investigation into a
Lochaber jet-ski crash, which claimed the life of a four-year-old boy,
is continuing, police said yesterday.
Caleb Cameron died in
hospital in Glasgow after being struck by the jet ski at Kilchoan Pier
on the Ardnamurchan peninsula on September 12.
Caleb is understood to have
been on the pier when the jet ski came out of the water and struck
him.
He received head injuries and
was initially treated by a nurse at the scene while a team of
specialists from Glasgow were flown to Kilchoan, but he died 24 hours
later.
His parents, Bert and Gail,
who live locally, were nearby when the accident happened.
It is understood the jet ski
was being ridden by a friend of the family.
The death stunned the
close-knit west Ardnamurchan community, and there was standing room
only at Kilchoan Parish Church for the youngster’s funeral service,
which was relayed to mourners outside last Friday.
Yesterday, Inspector Dougie
Allan, of Northern Constabulary’s Lochaber division, said:
“Investigations are still
ongoing into this incident. An expert is coming to examine the jet
ski, and we hope this will be done by the end of this week.”
He added: “All relevant
witnesses have been interviewed and, once the technical examinations
has been completed, we will liaise with the procurator fiscal service
over what happens next.”
Caleb was one of 12 pupils
and five nursery youngsters attending the village primary school on
the remote Ardnamurchan peninsula, where he was described as a
“lovely wee classmate”.
It is understood the Marine
Accident Investigation Branch has meanwhile completed its
investigation into the loss of the scallop dredger, the Aquila, which
sank of the Ardnamurchan coastline on July 27.
Three of her four-man crew,
who all came from Maryport in Cumbria, lost their lives.
Investigators will now
publish a report into their findings, which will then be submitted to
the procurator fiscal at Fort William.
A spokesman said it could be
some months before the report is published.

October : Daredevil Jason Is Jet-Ski Champ. |
By Jessica Forster
A Hartlepool daredevil is
celebrating after making a splash in a national jet-ski competition.
Jason Bleasdale has blown
away the competition to become the National Amateur Champion in
freestyle jet-ski.
Despite only being in the
sport for 18 months, the Hartlepool lad has mastered a string of
spectacular stunts.
The 24-year-old's impressive
performance in the final round of the nationals, at Stoney Stanton,
Leicestershire, last weekend, clinched him the title .
Jason, a car transporter,
from Greenfinch Close, Throston Grange, Hartlepool, said:
"I've won two titles
this year already. I won the Fosse Hill Championship in Hull two weeks
ago, and now the national amateur freestyle title.
"I won four out of six
rounds and came second and fifth in the other two."
In the freestyle heats
competitors have two minutes to perform as many tricks as possible and
impress a panel of five judges with their moves.
Riders are marked on the
number and quality of tricks they can fit in, and the style with which
they link the stunts together.
The Jet-Ski Freestyle
National Tour is Jason's first major win, and he hopes it could be his
stepping stone to the British championships.
The former Manor College
pupil and Hartlepool College of Further Education College student
first got into jet-skiing on a water sports holiday in Fuerteventura,
in the Canaries.
From then on he was hooked
and bought a stand-up jet-ski as soon as he got home so that he and
his fiancee, Kimberly Brown, 24, a beauty therapy lecturer at
Middlesbrough, could both do the sport.
Kimberly rides at the quieter
times but Jason can be spotted cutting up the waves in Hartlepool
Marina with World Champion Ant Burgees and former British Champion Dan
Rowan.
The trio train all over the
country, perfecting barrels, nose dives, back flips and other
dangerous tricks.
Thrillseeker Jason said he
has picked up plenty of tips from the pros, who he met at a
competition after he was spotted up by their sponsor, Loki Customs, a
jet-ski engineering firm.
Jason and Kimberly have
kitted out a camper van to allow them to travel to competitions all
over the UK.
The couple, who have been
together for seven years, hit the roads and the water every weekend to
practise their skills.
