September : Bristol Man Injured In Jetski Crash. |
A Bristol man has been
seriously injured after two jetskis crashed head-on off the Devon
coast.
The 62-year-old has suffered
suspected chest and spinal injuries as well as wounds to his face and
arms after the incident which happened shortly after 3pm yesterday.
The crash happened near
roughly 100 metres off the beach at the coastal town of Teignmouth,
which is about six miles south west of Exmouth.
A coastguard rescue team was
called to the scene after several concerned members of the public saw
the incident.
Another man, aged 59, was
less severely injured and there are unconfirmed reports that a swimmer
was also hurt in the collision.
The Bristol man had to be
winched from the sea by a coastguard helicopter and taken to Torbay
Hospital by land ambulance.
The coastguard immediately
broadcast a mayday relay to initiate a response from any vessels
nearby that could assist the persons suspected injured in the water.
Mark Satchell, watch manager
at Brixham Coastguard, said:
"It is unknown at this
stage what the circumstances are surrounding this collision which
happened approximately 100 metres off Teignmouth Beach.
"Further investigations
into this incident are taking place."

September : Speeding Jet Bike Rider Is Fined. |
Marine authorities have
branded a water jet bike rider who was fined for speeding as
"extremely dangerous".
Adam Langdown, of Seacole
Gardens, Southampton, was caught doing 46 knots in a six-knot zone on
Southampton Water in April.
He was cautioned by marine
police and allowed to proceed, but he then broke the limit again and
was apprehended.
Magistrates fined him £700
and ordered him to pay a further £1,714 costs when he appeared in
court last week.
Langdown was caught on 22
April when Cunard's "Three Queens" - Queen Mary 2, Queen
Victoria and Queen Elizabeth 2 - lined up in a historic meeting in
Southampton.
Police clocked him at 46
knots in a six-knot zone and claimed it was the equivalent of a
motorist doing 230mph in a 30mph limit.
Harbour Master, Captain
Philip Holliday, said:
"In this instance, Mr
Langdown was not only travelling at excess speed - on a day when the
water was very busy and extra care would have been preferable in any
case - but he had the audacity to ignore his initial warning from the
police and to then actually increase his speed.
"I believe the penalty
given to him is therefore appropriate.
"Any mariner who does
not comply with the law is posing an unacceptable risk to all users of
the port."
Sgt Andy Simpson, of
Hampshire Police Marine Support Unit, said: "Speeding on the
water is as unacceptable as it is on land.
"In this particular
case, it was potentially extremely dangerous."
In addition to the fine and
costs Langdown was ordered to pay a £15 contribution to the Victims'
Support Fund when he appeared at Southampton Magistrates' Court on 17
September.

September : Reckless Jet-Skier Called To Account. |
A man has been fined almost £2,500 for
riding his jet ski at nine-times the speed limit on Southampton Water,
the marine equivalent of driving 230mph in a 30mph zone.
On 22 April – when Cunard’s ‘three Queens’ (QEII, QM2
and Queen Victoria) were in port, and which was therefore an
exceptionally busy day on the water – Adam Robert Langdown, of
Seacole Gardens, Southampton, rode his jet ski at high speed through
the Eastern and Western Docks.
Mr Langdown was cautioned by marine
police before being allowed to proceed, but then broke the speed limit
again by travelling at 48 knots, the equivalent of travelling around
52mph on land.
A police launch, RIB Mariner V, gave chase and
Mr Langdown was apprehended.
As statutory harbour authority, Associated British Ports (ABP), which
also owns and operates the port, is the prosecuting authority for
Southampton Water and the port’s Harbour Master, Captain Philip
Holliday, took the decision to prosecute under byelaws that enforce a
6-knot speed limit.
After appearing in front of Southampton Magistrates on 17 September,
Mr Langdown was fined a total of £2,429 (representing a fine of £700,
costs of £1,714 and a contribution of £15 to the Victims’ Support
Fund).
Captain Holliday said:
“Southampton Water is a wonderful natural
resource that provides a huge amount of joy to tens of thousands of
leisure sailors in the Southampton region.
Although we are keen that
Southampton’s leisure-marine community should co-exist with the
port’s commercial shipping traffic, our paramount concern is for the
safety of all.
“In this instance, Mr Langdown was not only travelling at excess
speed – on a day when the water was very busy and extra care would
have been preferable in any case – but he had the audacity to ignore
his initial warning from the police and to then actually increase his
speed.
I believe the penalty given to him is therefore appropriate.
Any mariner who does not comply with the law is posing an unacceptable
risk to all users of the port – both commercial and leisure – and
I sincerely hope that this penalty will serve as a warning to
others.”
Sergeant Andy Simpson, Hampshire Police Marine Support Unit, who
intercepted Mr Langdown, said:
"Speeding on the water is as
unacceptable as it is on land, and, in this particular case, was
potentially extremely dangerous.
When we stopped Langdown his jet ski
was clocked at 46 knots. This is the equivalent of a motorist doing
230mph in a 30mph limit.
Speed limits exist to keep people safe, and
the six-knot speed limit in Southampton Water is all too often
ignored. Frequently, this is by boaters who are unaware that the speed
limit exists, but, having been warned by us already, this jet-skier
could not avail himself of this excuse.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the speed limit applies to all of the
Test and Itchen, up-river from a line that runs from Hythe Pier,
across Weston Shelf Buoy and continues to Weston Shore.
There are
exceptions to this that apply to water skiers in certain areas and
other vessels with the consent of the Harbour Master.
Whilst this
byelaw is the responsibility of the Southampton Harbour Master, the
Hampshire Constabulary Marine Unit will assist in enforcing this and
any other byelaws that relate to the water.
This conviction should
stand as a warning to boat users that we have the capability to
intercept marine craft in all circumstances. Once caught, we will work
with our partner agencies to ensure a robust prosecution."
Prior to Mr Langdown’s court appearance, ABP was assisted by Mark
Capon, of Marine Enforcement, which assists harbour authorities with
compliance and enforcement issues.

September : Scarborough Beach Drama Driver Pulled From Sea. |
Beachgoers came to the rescue
of a man who nearly found himself swept out to sea in his
four-by-four.
Scarborough driver Alex
Dawson played a key part by using his LandRover to tow the stricken
Nissan out of the waves in Scarborough's North Bay.
He was driving along Marine
Drive on his way home from Ruswarp when he saw the drama unfolding.
Realising he could not take
his vehicle on to the beach, he asked for permission and leapt into
action.
A tow rope was attached to
the Nissan, Mr Dawson got behind the wheel of his LandRover and dozens
of other people pulled on the rope to help driver James Houlsby bring
his Nissan to dry land.
Mr Houlsby, from Wakefield,
was caught by the incoming tide as he attempted to tow a jetski from
the sea.
Despite the efforts of
bemused by-standers to push the vehicle out of the water, it took the
fire brigade and Mr Dawson to haul it out.
Fire crew manager John
Mitchell said without the help of Mr Dawson, the vehicle would have
ended up under the water and drifting out to sea.

September : Woman Dies In Canadian Lake Crash. |
A British woman has died in a
sea scooter accident while on holiday in Ontario, Canada.
Pauline Moore, 62, from Wigan,
Greater Manchester, is believed to have swerved to avoid another
personal watercraft when she crashed on rocks.
The accident happened at
McKay Lake in Bracebridge, north of Toronto.
Ontario police said she
suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at a local
hospital. It is thought that she died instantly.
A police spokeswoman said she
did not have any "formal marine training" and that there was
no indication that alcohol was involved.
'Great person'
Mrs Moore was staying with
friends and relatives including her niece, close to where the crash
happened.
Pat Luongo, the husband of
Mrs Moore's niece Karen, said: "Pat was not your average
62-year-old. She was 62 but acted like she was 21, very young,
energetic, in great shape.
"She was a lot of fun,
just a great overall person and a tragic accident happened."
Mr Luongo, 39, of Oakville,
Ontario, said they had planned to visit Niagara Falls and attend a
Celine Dion concert with Mrs Moore.

September : Widow Dies In Jet-Ski Accident. |
A British widow has been killed in a jet-ski accident in Canada while
on a holiday to get over the death of her husband.
Former pub landlady Pauline Moore, 62, was believed to have been
dazzled by the sun and smashed into a reef as she rode the watercraft
across a lake in Ontario.
Moments earlier she told her niece: 'I'm just going for a little
ride and then I'll come back for a nap on the hammock.' She
suffered fatal injuries in the impact and died instantly.
The tragedy occurred after Pauline, of
Whelley, near Wigan, Greater
Manchester, had gone to the resort of Bracebridge, north of Toronto,
for a five-week trip following the death of her husband Kevin from a
brain haemorrhage.
She was staying with her niece Karen Luongo along with other
relatives and friends in rented cottages by the McKay Lake. The
jet-ski belonged to friends of Karen's husband although there is no
suggestion it was faulty.
Disaster struck when Pauline was riding a jet-ski across the water
and swerved to avoid a waterboarder.
She rode directly into the path of the sun causing her to be
dazzled by rays and unable to see underwater rocks which were marked
by a small buoy.
Karen said: 'We are all devastated by what's happened. Pauline was
having the time of her life and then this happens.
She had been out on her jet-ski the previous two days without any
problems because they are not hard to drive.
You thought you didn't need a licence and all our kids use them.
Pauline wasn't going particularly fast and the lake wasn't that busy
either.
I was the one who pushed her off from the shore. She said:
"I'm just gong for a little ride and then I'll come back from a
nap on the hammock".
The sun was bright and quite low so it maybe it dazzled her. Those
who saw the crash said she swerved as if she was trying to avoid
something like a waterboarder. There was a marker on the rocks but it
wasn't very big.
Pauline, who used to work as an office clerk and care worker, will
be buried alongside her husband, a former rugby player who died two
and a half years ago.
Her sister-in-law Mavis Stanway said: 'It was only in the last 12
months that she was starting to overcome the lost of Kevin.
Her mother had also passed away in the past three years and life
for Pauline had been quite tough. She was really living life to the
full having already been to Canada for Karen's wedding and also a
holiday in Australia.
The one thing we are hanging on to from this terrible situation is
that she did not suffer. The coroner has said death was instantaneous
and that she wouldn't have known anything about it.
It is also perhaps a blessing that she and Kevin didn't have
children. We are only hearing things from Canada second hand but we
wondered whether there has to be some kind of investigation.
Pauline's neighbour Florence Catterall said: 'I am devastated
because Pauline was so bubbly and had lots of friends.
She was a rambler and was always swimming at local baths and out
in her car and going on holidays. She certainly liked travel and was
really looking forward to going back to Canada.
Pauline's body is expected to be flown back to Britain on Friday.
An Ontario police department report said a licence was required to
ride the jet-ski and added: 'Mrs Moore hadn't received any formal
marine training and had only brief instruction on the operation of the
watercraft prior to the accident.
The investigation continues.'
