UK Personal Watercraft News

30th June : Police Jetski Used In Crime Crackdown.
Marine officers will be using a new jet ski to patrol the shores off Southend and Castle Point this summer.
The Essex Police Marine Unit has been given the jet ski by watersports company Seadoo to help boost patrols along the county's coastline, promote safety and crack down on crime.
DC Simon Lofting, acting sergeant at the unit, which is based in Burnham, said the personal watercraft is a unique tool as it can reach more populated areas, such as beaches, that standard police boats would be unable to.
He said: "The summer time can see an increased number of incidents on the water.
"Officers will use it to promote water safety, prevent crime and accidents, enforce speed limits and crack down on those breaching water bylaws.
"It will also help us to interact with the boating community as we can pull up alongside other personal water crafts and talk to them."
The Seadoo GTI 4tec personal watercraft is on loan to the unit for a year, although it is hoped this will be extended.

28th June : Exciting line-up for Glasgow River Festival.
The Glasgow River Festival returns over the Glasgow Holiday Weekend on the 19th and 20th July 2008 with a revamped and action packed programme of events and activities for all ages, on land and on water.
New to this year’s festival will be a thrilling display of Jet Sport Ski racing and Glasgow’s first ever beach volleyball tournament.
The festival, which takes place in and around The Tall Ship at Glasgow Harbour, the SECC, Glasgow Science Centre and BBC Scotland, attracted over 85,000 visitors in 2007 and this year’s event looks set to become another unmissable family weekend.
On Water
Spectators at the Glasgow River Festival will be able to enjoy sensational Jet Ski demonstrations from the Jet Sport Racing Association, which will include dramatic routines and spectacular stunts, as well as nail-biting races which are sure to thrill the crowd.
Nautical enthusiasts will be able to step on-board an impressive fleet of visiting ships including the Loth Loriën schooner, two Royal Navy Hunt class minesweepers and the Jacinta, a Fleetwood trawler, which now acts as a floating museum of deep sea fisheries. Entry onto The Tall Ship at Glasgow Harbour will be free of charge for the duration of the festival.
In addition, The Puffer from Inverary – “The Vital Spark of Glasgow” - returns to the festival and will be joined by the last Clyde-built Puffer - Spartan - from the Scottish Maritime Museum at Irvine.
For the more active visitor, Seaforce, the powerboat training school, will be offering short rides on a fast rib and Festival favourite the Zapcat, will once again be available for taster sessions.
For a more leisurely trip, Clyde Marine Cruises will be offering tours down the river allowing visitors a closer view of the city’s famous shipyards. Additionally, The Great Glasgow Duck Race returns this year – visitors can sponsor a plastic duck for £1, with the fastest duck winning its owner a fantastic prize. All proceeds will go to the Variety Club of Scotland.
On Land
The excitement continues on land with Glasgow’s first ever Beach Volleyball tournament – one of the Olympics’ hottest new sports. Part of the Urban Beach Tour 2008, the Scottish Masters tournament will take place on a specially created beach at the SECC, with teams battling it out in a high-energy display of sporting prowess throughout the weekend.
A host of tempting culinary delights also awaits at this year’s festival. Back by popular demand, the Crowne Plaza Glasgow will be hosting a summer barbeque by the banks of the Clyde, with rib-tickling entertainment close at hand for the little ones and a Farmer’s Market will showcase local produce from across Scotland.
BBC Scotland’s marquee will be bursting with activity, with a host of well known faces joining in the fun. Visitors will get the chance to read the news alongside Reporting Scotland presenters and try their hand at football commentating. CBBC’s Raven (James MacKenzie) and Nina (Katrina Bryan) from the popular Cbeebies Nina and the Neurons series will also be making an appearance across the weekend.
The Glasgow Science Centre provides a combination of fun and education during the festival, with crowd-pleasing science demonstrations as well as less conventional belly dancing performances and a display from rugby stars, the Glasgow Warriors. Adrenalin lovers will enjoy a dramatic abseiling demonstration from the Royal Marines, while the young-at-heart can visit a number of funfairs throughout the festival area.
Bailie Liz Cameron, Vice-Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau said:
“The Glasgow River Festival has evolved into a wonderful celebration of the River Clyde, which has been at the heart of the city’s industrial success and is now home to some of our most exciting entrepreneurial ventures.
“As part of the city’s exciting annual programme of cultural events, the festival highlights a number of exhilarating and entertaining ways to enjoy the river.
“The River Clyde is steeped in a fascinating history and is not only an important part of the past but an imperative part of the future success of Glasgow. The series of events that make up the Glasgow River Festival ensure that the riverside remains an interesting and accessible place for locals and visitors alike.”
Getting to and from the festival has never been easier with a free bus service provided by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT). The buses will transport festival goers from key locations in Glasgow City Centre to the SECC and Glasgow Science Centre, with additional buses running from Greenock, Hamilton and Kilmarnock.
The Glasgow River Festival runs from 11am until 6pm on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th July 2008. For more information, visit Glasgowriverfestival.co.uk.

27th June : Donation Gives Marine Patrols A Boost.
By Morwenna Holland
Members of the marine community are being warned to watch their speed on the waterways around the county this summer as a new personal watercraft will be used to boost patrols.
Donated by Seadoo BRP, specialists in watercrafts and sport boats, with insurance provided free of charge by Towergate Marden, the Seadoo GTI 4tec personal watercraft will help promote water safety and assist in the crack down against those breaching water by-laws.
Dc Simon Lofting of the Essex Police Marine Unit based in Burnham said:
“We are extremely grateful to both Seadoo and Towergate Marden for this donation. The summertime can see an increased number of incidents on the water. Last year two jet skis collided head-on, resulting in one casualty having five metal plates fitted in his head to enable skull and facial reconstruction.
“With the use of the personal watercraft officers will be able to get closer into beaches and reach more populated areas that would have been too dangerous for a standard police rib to go. The use of this equipment will also help us to further interact with the community and can be utilised for river or lake searches when required.”
The personal watercraft will be on loan to the marine unit for one year.
It will be officially donated by representatives from Seadoo and Towergate Marden on Thursday, June 26 at Burnham Marina.

22nd June : New Water Bye-Laws Riddled With Flaws, Claims New Group.
By Martina Nee
Galway watersports enthusiasts have come together to highlight concerns for the proposed Fast Water-Craft and PWC’s (Jetski’s) bye-laws which they say are riddled with flaws.
The newly formed Galway Powerboat and Watersports Club are calling on the public to read the proposed bye-laws as it could affect the future of boating in Galway.
According to the group’s secretary, Niall O’Flaherty, GPWC feel that the bye-laws were drafted because of complaints regarding a minority of “irresponsible watercraft users in Galway” and that not much thought has gone into the drawing up of the proposals.
“For example, one proposed bye-law states that you can only water-ski in a main navigation channel. This completely contradicts what you would be taught at any training centre.
They [the County Council] are proposing that the only place a person can water-ski is where all boat movement takes place.
“Unfortunately, the council is emphasising on the restriction of speed, but do not give any good reason. Speed has not been a dominating factor in boating accidents in Galway for as long as I can remember, and I have been on the water for 16 years.
The majority of deaths caused by PWC’s are due to hypothermia after a person enters the water which has no relation to speed. In reality, a fast moving boat is causing much less harm to wildlife and the environment,” he said.
GPWC are also encouraging the Council to introduce mandatory registration for vessels to be used on Galway Bay/Lough Corrib so that in the event of an incident or disruption they can be identified.
GPWC aim to promote the safe and responsible use of fast water craft in Galway without sacrificing the fun for other water users.
They are encouraging less experienced water users to join the club.
The next meeting will take place at Bow Waves, Galway Harbour Enterprise Park, New Docks, Galway (behind Pat Rynn’s Engineering) tonight, Monday June 23 and Monday, June 30, at 7pm.
All members of the public are welcome to attend.

17th June : Compromise May Allow Jet Skis Back In Bay's.
Galway City Council believes it has reached a satisfactory compromise with pressure groups who have been lobbying for the ban on jet skis on Galway Bay to be lifted.
Fast power craft were banned from the coastal area last year following a number of near misses with swimmers.
The Council has considered representations from interested groups however, and new bye laws have been drafted which are hoped to represent an acceptable compromise.
A designated area 250m from shore is to be marked out with cardinal buoys, beyond which water sports involving jet skis would be permitted.
Signs would warn swimmers not to go beyond the line of buoys, which is to stretch from Grattan Road to Silverstrand.
Two launching pads will be in place at Palmers Rock and Silverstrand, according to Cllr Padraig Conneely (FG).
Last year the Coast Guard reported a ten percent increase in jet ski accidents

17th June : Shark Fright For Jetski Trio.
Three pals from St Dogmaels had a lucky escape at sea over the weekend when their jetski snagged on a trailing rope and they claimed they were circled by a shark.
Aled Rees, Lewis Fletcher and Steff Thomas set off on a three-seat jetski from Traeth Mawr in Newport Pembs on Saturday afternoon.
They were pulling a body board and about a mile and a half offshore a trailing rope was sucked into the jetski cutting off the engine.
The jetski, which was not equipped with flares or VHF radio, drifted out to sea for about 15 minutes before Lewis used a mobile telephone to contact his father Peter who is an auxiliary coastguard at Moylegrove.
His father raised the alarm and the Fishguard lifeboat was scrambled.
In the meantime the three friends, all of whom were wearing wetsuits, decided to swim ashore pushing the jetski.
But shortly after entering the water they spotted a large fin some 20 metres away and the three scrambled back on board.
Taking up the story Steff said:
"We saw the fin and it circled the jetski twice before disappearing.
"We couldn't see if it was a basking shark or some other shark, but it was quite frightening, especially as we were helpless," he said.
"Fortunately we had a mobile phone and we'd like to thank the lifeboat crew who were marvellous. But for them I hate to think what might have happened.
"From now on we will pay more attention to safety and carry flares," he said.
A spokesman for HM Coastguard said:
"We would urge anyone putting to sea to ensure they have all the correct safety equipment such as radios, flares and life jackets."

16th June : It's A Hard Life For A Jetski Champ.
Jetski Champ, Jason Young found himself surrounded by glamorous young ladies this week.

Jason joined the girls at the semi final stages of the Miss England Contest held at Champney Springs, near Ashby De La Zouch.

Whilst there, Jason managed to drag himself away from the ladies to also spend some time discussing a mutual love of anything fast with Miss England judge Calum Best.
With the 1st round of the European Tour only a few weeks away the relaxed atmosphere of Champney's facilities provide a welcome break from his hectic training schedule.

11th June : Man Escapes Injury In Jet Ski Drama.
Evening Gazette
A jet ski crashed into rocks by Redcar after the rider got into difficulties on blustery seas.
The man was not seriously injured during the incident at about 5.20pm last night.
After swimming ashore he was helped to safety by the junior watch keeper at Coastwatch Redcar and the coastguard’s jeep was called.
A nearby fisherman helped him recover the jet ski, which had carried on travelling and grounded on East Scar Rocks further down the bay.
Coastwatch Redcar’s station controller, Ray Preston, said:
“We informed Humber Coastguard that a man riding a jet ski approximately 100 yards out at sea opposite our lookout station got into difficulties and was knocked off his jet ski and started swimming ashore.”

POSTPONED! St Osyth 21st/22nd June

We are sorry to report that unfortunately due to the unusually wet weather the farmer's field (hay) that we will be using as a pit area for round 3 is too wet to cut and because there isn’t enough time between now and the planned date for it to dry out sufficiently to cut we have been forced to postpone the event.
At the moment we are looking at the weekends of 16/17 Aug and the 30/31st Aug – as replacement dates but we should have all the details for riders meeting this Saturday at Round 2.
If you can’t make round 2 then don’t worry as the website will be fully updated on Monday with all the latest information.
