16th August : Landcruiser Takes A Dip In Courtown Harbour.
An unlucky Arklow man had an unfortunate end to a day trip to Courtown on Sunday last, when his Toyota Landcruiser was totally submerged in Courtown Harbour.
He had been launching a jetski off the slipway, when the vehicle's wheels lost grip on the algae at the bottom of the slipway, and the vehicle slid backwards into the water.
The handbrake had been applied, and the vehicle had been left in gear, but the sway of the trailer led to the wheels being dislodged.
Luckily no-one was in the jeep, but the trailer which was attached to the vehicle had jack-knifed, leaving the recovery operation all the more difficult.
Members of Courtown Lifeboat attempted to pull the vehicle and its trailer out of the water using the winch that is used to launch the Lifeboat, but the task proved too much for the winch.
Rob and Joe Ireton brought their tractor to the scene, and they managed to haul the Landcruiser and its trailer out of the water and up onto the north pier, where the owner was left scratching his head as to what to do with his sodden vehicle.
Users of the slipway are advised to use extension drawbars when launching watercraft, and are asked never to leave children in the vehicle, in case of such a mishap occurring.

16th August : Andrew English's Column.
If it's summer, there must be an abundance of people towing things on the road. But it's not the caravan owner who's the villain of the piece...
Blame La Nina, carbon dioxide or a good old British summer, but it won’t have escaped your notice that we haven’t seen much of Mr Sun so far this year.
Yet biblical floods, rain, even hailing frogs don’t seem to have put off that stalwart of British bank holiday roads, the caravanner.
This hardy breed, with their winceyette curtains, chemical loos, pull-out divans and Spam sautéed on Calor gas stoves, once counted such luminaries as Jeremy Clarkson, Jay Kay, Kylie Minogue and former Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett among their number.
In fact, the redoubtable Caravan Club is celebrating its centenary this year. Started on 14 June 1907, today it represents 900,000 caravanners, motor caravanners and trailer tent owners.
An endless source of cheap gags, the experienced caravanner tends to be one of the more competent towing drivers on the roads. Most maintain a good pace, have extended mirrors, load up their Spam correctly and (occasionally) pull over to let faster traffic past. To that rare tally of good trailer pilots add drawbar lorry, semi-artic and (most) horsebox drivers, plus the occasional breakdown mechanic.
But let’s finger the bad guys here. You know who they are.
The nincompoop council road repair truck with an industrial compressor bouncing behind it like a five-year-old’s balloon on a string. The hired trailer carrying some rusty old Jag that weighs more than Portsmouth and weaves from side to side like a clock pendulum. The scaffolder’s seven-and-a-half-tonne lorry, with a trailer on the back to hold his extra steel poles, spare brains and copies of The Sun.
Then there’s the worst of the lot: the jet ski trailer tower, otherwise known as the Romford Navy. Five gadzillion horsepower on the back and a brain so addled with Ambre Solaire, chips and Mr Whippy that they can’t keep the car under 90mph. You can see them hanging upside down from trees along the A12 every day of the summer.
Few, if any, of these drivers will have had any towing training, as anyone who passed their test before 1 January 1997 is entitled to pull vehicle and trailer combinations up to 8.25 tonnes gross combination weight, and minibus and trailer combinations over 750kg gross. If you’ve passed your test in the life of this Labour Government, you can tow a trailer weighing up to 750kg and also a combination up to 3.5 tonnes, provided the gross weight of the trailer is not greater than the kerbweight of the pulling vehicle.
Anything else and you need to get a B+E car and trailer qualification. It’s complicated and you’ll need tuition. Try the following for more advice:
the Camping and Caravanning Club (www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk), Caravan Club (www.caravanclub.co.uk ), Institute of Advanced Motorists (www.iam.org.uk ) and Drivecraft (www.drivecraft.co.uk).
Actually, I hate caravans. It’s something to do with spending vast amounts of my childhood in the rear-facing seats of a Volvo estate watching a Sprite Major weaving behind us along evilly surfaced French and Spanish roads. Boring doesn’t begin to describe the experience. Once, to relieve the dullness, my brother and I made up a story about a Renault that had just overtaken us with a set of pram wheels on its roof. We told Dad that the carrycot part of the pram had fallen off in a ditch.
We gave chase, and the sight of the caravan skidding round behind us was epic. Some hours later, dad caught the Frenchman and attempted to explain how he’d lost the rest of his pram. While dad was out of the car we owned up to mum, and the sight of this chap’s bemused face had us in stitches. Funny how dad didn’t see it the same way.
Anyway, we salute you birthday caravanners. May the Spam be with you – and remember, you will always be one up from the Romford Navy.

15th August : Success Makes World Of Difference For Ace Ant.
Crewe Chronicle
Ant Burgess is learning to live with his new star status.
The 17-year-old, from Nantwich, admits his life changed the moment he won at the world jetski finals in Arizona last year.
While the sport of free-style jetski does not often grab the headlines in his home country, Ant is a hero in other parts of the world.
The former Malbank School pupil, who is celebrating a new sponsor-ship deal with Frodsham Watersports, said:
"I am getting used to being recognised and people knowing my name.
It is a strange feeling, and quite nerve-wracking at times.
I've done a few demonstrations and ski clinics, and I've noticed that some youngsters have been too scared to talk to me.
I don't want them to feel like that, and I make sure they feel comfortable.
But it was me who felt uncomfortable in the last round of the European Champion-ships in Portugal!
There was a big parade through the streets, and thousands watched us perform.
There were helicopters flying above and the event was live on TV.
It was a good feeling, but I'm glad it is not like that all the time."
Freestyle jetskiing sees riders perform as many stunts as they can in two minutes in a bid to impress a panel of judges.
Their routines get rated on difficulty, success of tricks and crowd appreciation.
Manoeuvres include barrel rolls, somersaults, aerial turns, sub marine dives and fruit loops.
Ant was a rank outsider when he beat competitors from across the globe to become world amateur freestyle champion at Lake Havasu in November.
The British Champion also came third in the professional competition.
Now he is aiming for top spot in this year's professional event in late September.
And after winning the first three rounds of the British Championships so far this year, and notching a first and two second places in the Europeans - in France, Belgium and Portugal - he is in fine form.
Ant said: "I'm going to try to get them all. That's the aim. I've improved since last year. I've learned some new tricks and I'll have more ready in time for the world finals."
In addition to competition, Ant's jet-set lifestyle has seen him wow crowds during two displays at Thorpe Amusement Park near Heathrow, give a demonstration at the Plymouth Sportsboat Show, and perform a weekend of displays at the River Bann Festival in Northern Ireland in front of more than 10,000 spectators.
He will fly to Malaysia in early September with the Xtreme Action display team to put on a show, before crossing the Atlantic for the world finals.
James Dyer, who owns Frodsham Watersports, said:
"We are delighted to have sponsored Ant. For him to go to America and come back as world champion shows how truly talented he is."
Ant would also like to thank sponsors Loki Customs, Preben Jet-ski Centre, Gecko Headgear, THC Industries, Oxygen Clothing and Justwatersports.com for their support.

13th August : Abandoned Craft Sparks Sea Search.
A personal watercraft found abandoned with its engine running sparked a major search for its rider, who swam ashore without telling the emergency services.
Dover coastguard said a helicopter, a spotter plane and four lifeboats were involved in the search off Pegwell Bay, in Kent, which could have been avoided.
Two of the man's friends also launched their own search, but got their jeep stuck in mud with the tide coming in.
Coastguard spokesman John Brewin said they could walk to safety without help.
He said about 50 people were involved in the search on Sunday night after the sea scooter rider fell off his machine.
They were told he was safe after about an hour-and-a-half, but rescue teams then had to be rescrambled following reports that his friends were stuck in mud in Pegwell Bay.
"All in all, a lot of time, a lot of effort, and a lot of expense," Mr Brewin said.

6th August : Reckless Youths Caught On Camera Jet Skiing Through Flooded Villages.
A group of youngsters who took a jetski onto flooded streets in the Gloucestershire deluge are being investigated by police after posting their film on the internet.
As residents of the market town struggled to save their homes and possessions from the rising waters, the youngsters were filmed using the high-powered jetski - sending waves cascading into vulnerable properties.
Police are examining the footage after a resident was assaulted when he confronted a group of jetskiers in the area.
Roger Sillick, who lives in the Lansdown area of Stroud, suffered injuries to his arm and his wrist after asking a group to stop jetskiing in the floodwaters.
"We had all been working all afternoon trying to rescue possessions and people," said the 62-year-old, who has lived in the town for 30 years.
"Some people didn't want to leave their homes, possessions were sinking all around us, then these guys came along with their 4x4 and a jetski.
"I asked them politely to stop it, they had had their fun and it was causing problems with the waves.
"But they didn't like that, and started shoving me around, trying to throw me in the flood waters I think."
Neighbours and witnesses intervened and when the police were called, the men fled.
Video of the youths' antics has now appeared on internet video website YouTube, where crowds are heard cheering on the jetski rider as he speeds across the waves.
More than 10,000 people have already logged on to view the footage.
Mr Sillick said:
"I wonder if they understand the problems that they caused people and what everyone had been through that day."
Gloucestershire Police spokesman Matt Ford said police were keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident.
"It looks like the offenders were attempting to throw the man into the floodwater after he approached them," he said.
He said officers were examining the YouTube footage.
Anyone with information regarding the incident should contact police on 0845 090 1234, or anonymously on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, quoting incident number 1431 of July 20.

3rd August : Authorities Powerless To Stop Beach 'Maniacs'.
By Chris Pollard
Families enjoying the sun on the beach at West St Leonards were horrified when a 'maniac' jet-skier shattered their peace.
The hot weather and school holidays meant the beach was packed near the old Bathing Pool site when the jet-ski zoomed into the area from the Hastings direction on Wednesday afternoon.
What followed was a terrifying display of recklessness, which put swimmers and children in serious danger.
One onlooker said: "At first he was circling a man in a kayak at speed, making the water rough, and we thought they must know each other and be messing about.
"But then he headed over to a dinghy with three people on board - at least two of whom were children - and started speeding around them. One of the people in the boat was shaking his fist at him.
"It looked like one fell in the water and the jet-skier then went away some distance, turned around and headed directly at them as if he was going to ram into them, which made two of them jump into the water in fear.
"At this point we rang the Coastguard. While we were on the phone he careered straight up to the beach by the wooden groyne, about 10 feet from the shore, where families and kiddies were playing, and literally in amongst a group of children who were swimming.
"It was horrifying. We were sure one of the children was going to be hit by the jet-ski. If anyone was swimming underwater there they'd have been seriously injured, if not killed.
"He swung around the children and roared off to a section of beach further up.
"He was driving like a maniac and was an absolute idiot. Everyone on the beach was talking about it.
"We just hope the authorities were able to take action so it doesn't happen again."
A spokesman for the Coastguard said Wednesday afternoon's incident was part of a new recurring problem in Hastings.
In fact, it was the second time this week a jet-skier had disrupted the peace.
Hastings Council spokesman Kevin Boorman said the authority is now considering new by-laws to prevent this kind of thing from happening in future.
Mr Boorman said: "Because they don't launch and land here, we don't currently have any powers to deal with jet-skis.
"This has never been a problem before, but it is becoming so, and clearly we will react as a matter of urgency."
