September : Great
Granny's Jetski Run For Charity. |
| FORMER Mintlaw
woman Eleanor Stephen has recently completed a six-mile sponsored jet
ski run from Cairnbulg to Sandhaven in aid of charity.
|
| The 60-year-old
great granny took on the fundraising task in a bid to raise money for
Fraserburgh Autistic Group, and realised an impressive £300 for her
efforts.
|
| Eleanor, who
now lives in Fraserburgh, said she was initially a bit nervous about
taking on the task as she couldn't swim and was terrified of the open
sea, but admitted she didn't let it get the better of her as she was
determined to help young children who suffer from autism.
|
| She told the
Buchanie: "Thankfully the sea wasn't too choppy and it was a
wonderful experience."
|
| Eleanor, whose
family still reside in Mintlaw, has expressed thanks to all her
sponsors, most of whom came from the Mintlaw and Maud areas. I would
especially like to thank the team of jet skiers who accompanied me on
the short but very strenuous journey," she said.
|
| Eleanor admits
that a few years ago she would never have dreamt of going on the back
of a jet ski, let alone put on a dry suit as she says she would have
had to get one specially made to accommodate her size!
|
| However, a few
months ago, as previously reported in the Buchan Observer, Eleanor
lost a massive seven-and-a-half stones in weight, giving her the
confidence to carry out such a fundraising event.
|
| Eleanor says
that she is now looking forward to her next fundraising challenge,
although she is not too sure what that is going to be.
|
| She added:
"Watch this space... the sky's the limit!"

Rider Killed. |
| Leah Oatway,
Wales on Sunday
|
| A man was
killed in a jetski accident in North Wales yesterday afternoon.
|
| The male,
understood to be in his 40s, suffered serious head injuries in the
accident off Abersoch on the Llyn Peninsula.
|
| The accident is
believed to have happened after his jetski hit a large wave at around
3.45pm yesterday.
|
| A spokesperson
for Holyhead coastguard said: "It looks as though the man was
sent into the air, sustaining serious head injuries.
|
| "There
were three men, on jetskis involved in the incident - which we
initially thought was a collision."
|
| A lifeboat was
launched from Abersoch at 3.46pm, which returned the men to the beach
before emergency CPR began on the most seriously injured victim.
|
| He was then
flown by air ambulance to Ysbyty Gwynedd but later died.

September : Warning
Over Holiday Watersports Safety. |
| Press
Association
|
| Holidaymakers
are being put at risk by unsafe equipment and procedures used by some
watersports operators, a report said today. More than half the
inspected firms put their customers in potential danger, according to
Holiday Which? magazine.
|
| A watersports
safety consultant from the Royal Society for the Prevention of
Accidents found seven watersports centres on Corfu and Spain's Costa
Blanca were unsafe.
|
| Another four
centres on the Greek island had faults which made them potentially
unsafe.
|
| Only seven of
the 18 operators tested had safe operating procedures and equipment.
|
| Some operators
were "woefully slack", according to the magazine. Editor
Lorna Cowan said: "It's not much fun having to spend your
precious holiday time in casualty. We saw too many watersports
operators who are making this all too likely with their total
disregard for safety standards."
|
| The inspector
assessed the safety of towed inflatable rides, parasailing,
water-skiing, windsurfing and jet-ski equipment, plus operating
procedures at each centre.
|
| Holiday Which?
warned that one-man operations are more likely to be unsafe.
|
| It urged
holidaymakers to check that watersports equipment is properly stored
and looked after, and that operators supply them with properly-fitting
life jackets and helmets.
|
| Watersports
operators should always ask about customers' personal details and any
medical conditions, the consumer group warned.

September : Siblings
Take One And Two In National Championships. |
| By Tim Ashton
|
| A brother and
sister are ruling the waves after taking first and second place in the
Jet Ski Racing Association (JSRA) British Championships.
|
| Danny and
Brooke Mace were competing in the summer series beginner junior ski
class which culminated in Milton Keynes last weekend.
|
| Going into the
final of six rounds spread throughout the summer, any of the top four
in the class of seven could have won the title.
|
| Brooke, 15, was
in top spot and leading her brother by 23 points but in the end Danny,
13, took the chequered flag and the overall trophy with a winning
margin of just nine points from his sister.
|
| Dad Russell,
who also races and finished sixth in the novice class, said: "I
am very proud of them and it is just a shame one of them had to win.
|
| "As
brother and sister they are getting a lot of attention and we have
been invited to race abroad next year which will be a great experience
for them."
|
| The family, who
live on Erith Road, Bexleyheath, discovered the siblings' talent for
jet skiing purely by chance.
|
| Russell said:
"I used to go jet skiing as a recreational thing about five years
ago and I got involved in racing about two years ago.
|
| "The kids
came along to watch and they said they wanted a go, so we decided to
see what they were like before we brought them a bike as they can be
expensive.
|
| "A friend
of mine who trains jet skiers said Brooke and Danny had a natural
talent for the sport and so we went for it."
|
| Their bikes are
Kawasaki SX 800R machines which cost around £5,000 each with an
additional £2,000 costs for any modifications.
|
| Russell said:
"We have sponsorship from a company called Southern Ductwork but
we're always grateful for any help.
|
| "The
children have over taken my racing now and I come second to their
development.
|
| "It is a
question of them getting established now and then we can look at other
options.
|
| "There is
no prize money in the UK at their level but some competitions abroad
do have prizes."
|
| Brooke and
Danny attend Erith School, Avenue Road, Bexley, and they travel to
either Northampton or Oxford to train.
|
| Russell said:
"Jet skiing is a minority sport but anyone who comes and watches
is always amazed at how good it is.
|
| "A friend
who likes motocross came once and really liked it, I guess it is like
motocross on water."
|
| The JSRA has
cleaned up the sport's image of late as it had poor press due to what
Russell calls idiots causing problems on coastal resorts'.
|
| He said:
"They would break all the rules and give us a bad name but now
you have to be licensed and it has really helped to clean up the
sport."

September : Bore
Riders Rescued From Mudflats. |
| Four men
attempting to ride the Severn Bore on their personal watercraft were
rescued after becoming trapped in mud.
|
| A team from the
Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) were called to Frampton Sands on
Sunday afternoon.
|
| The group could
not be reached by lifeboat and a helicopter from RAF Chivenor in Devon
was called in to airlift them to safety.
|
| A two-hour
search continued for a fifth man, who was later found to have
scrambled ashore near Slimbridge.
|
| His watercraft
was later found washed up several miles away at Chepstow.
|
| SARA coxswain
Geoff Dawe said the men, all said to be in their 40s, had not realised
the strength and swiftness of the tides.
|
| He added that
the lives of others were put at risk, not just their own.
|
| "There's a
major implication, that personal watercraft chasing the bore are a
great danger to surfers," he said.
|
| "They
could make them fall off and run them down."
|
| Hundreds of
surfers and sightseers come to the River Severn to ride or watch the
tidal waves, which can reach up to 2m (6ft).

September : Bro'ty
Jetskier Hits Back At Dolphin Claims. |
| Jet-skier
Maureen McLay hit back at claims jetskiers from Broughty Ferry may
have been responsible for the injuries to the Tay’s dolphins.
|
| “I am one of
the jetskiers using the Tay and feel we responsible jet-skiers are not
been given a fair chance or a fair report in connection with the
dolphins,” she said.
|
| “We are not
the only vessel on the water and if someone inspected a jetski they
would see for themselves that it has no propeller or rudder, making it
a very safe vehicle on the water.
|
| “There are
more boats compared to jetskis using the Tay. Boats range from small
fishing boats, and speedboats to large cargo boats — all with
engines using a propeller and rudders. As you can imagine, the
propeller turns at great speed and can shred any item that comes in
contact with it.
|
| “Dolphins and
seals are able to detect objects on the water and, as we are smaller,
then it is easy for them to dive under or around a jetski.
|
| “With regards
to jet-skiers making off towards the dolphins, I do agree we do go out
and view the dolphins, but we spend only a short period of time
viewing. It should also be noted that no vessel on the water can go
where it likes, and a bystander on the shore would probably not be
aware we have set channels for leaving and entering the shore.
|
| “This could
look as if we are heading straight to the dolphins as they tend to be
in the deeper channels and away from the shore, but we have to be
set-distances from the shore and also within marked areas, as per the
bylaws.
|
| “My hobby is
turning me into a victim of verbal abuse, both at work and when
launching, as the public are only hearing the negative side of my
sport and are assuming we are all the same.”

September : Jetski
Ban To Be Implemented In Four Weeks. |
| By Mary Mullins
|
| A law which is
set to ban jet skis from Co Westmeath lakes could be implemented
within a month.
|
| Members of
Westmeath County Council voted unanimously at their monthly meeting on
Monday to banish jet skis from all the lakes in the county, except
Lough Ree which falls under the remit of Waterways Ireland.
|
|
Councillors were told at
Monday's meeting that it will take some four weeks before the ban will
brought into law.
|
|
Lough Derravaragh, famous for
the Children of Lir legend, is one of the more popular locations for
jet skiers, along with Lough Owel, Lough Ennell, and Lough Lene.
|
|
Lough Ree may now face
increasing pressure as jet skiers are banished from the other lakes in
the county.
|
|
Cllr Mark Cooney says Lough
Ree is a good location for jet skiers as it can facilitate larger
numbers. However he noted that although the lake is regulated by
Waterways Ireland, the council still control the shores and could
prevent the areas along it being used to launch jet skis onto the
lake. "The county council have draft bylaws which they could
implement. These would regulate and could prohibit launch areas on the
lake's shore."
|
|
FF Cllr Kevin 'Boxer' Moran
is another supporter of the ban. He also believes that an area could
be allocated for jet-skiing on Lough Ree, but at a location away from
popular public bathing and amenity areas like Hodson Bay and Coosan
Point.
|
|
Cllr Moran also called on
Westmeath County Council to allocate funding for the provision of a
launch pad for jet-skiers on the lake. He told the Athlone Advertiser
he believes €40,000 - €60,000 would cover the cost of providing
this facility and he would hope to see it in place by next summer.
|
|
The FF councillor confirmed
he met with jet skiers recently and they were in favour of zoning an
area for jet-skiing on Lough Ree and developing a launch pad along the
shore. He says he plans to organise a meeting with the jet-skiers, the
Gardai, Westmeath County Council, Waterways Ireland, and other
interested parties to work on developing this idea.
|
|
Waterways Ireland confirmed
to the Athlone Advertiser this week that they currently have no plans
to ban jet-skis from Lough Ree, and neither have they plans to zone
areas of the lake for jet ski use.
|
|
However Eanna Roe of
Waterways Ireland noted that zoning plans may change, as Waterways
Ireland are reviewing their by-laws and organising a public
consultation process towards the end of this year or early next year.
He explained that if it transpires that there are problems on the lake
with jet skiing, zoning will be considered.
|
|
The move to rid jet skis from
the lake county's waterways comes following a long period of
complaints about disturbances caused by jet skis. Fishermen were
particularly aggrieved, as well as the general public using the lakes
for swimming and other recreational activities.
|
|
During the public
consultation period on the draft bylaws for the ban, an estimated
15,000 submissions were made by the public.
|
|
FG Cllr Mark Cooney told the
Athlone Advertiser there have been complaints for some time, and that
although there are responsible jet skiers, the complete ban on
Westmeath lakes was the right decision. "There have been major
problems with jet skiers. There are responsible users, but I think
this ban is for the greater good."
|
|
Phil Knowd, an avid jet ski
user on Lough Ree has a mixed reaction to the banning. He says that
while it might be the right decision for smaller lakes, he feels a
zoning process would work well on larger lakes.
|
|
He told the Athlone
Advertiser; "On smaller lakes it is a good idea as the skis go
very fast and often there is not a large amount of water which can
prove dangerous for other water users. On larger lakes, we should look
to the UK and Meditteranean areas where they zone lakes for different
uses."
|
|
However Phil feels the main
problem with jet skis is a lack of education of the users.
"People need to be educated, to get them to realise what they are
doing when out in the water and to think about other water
users."
|
|
