29th August : Jetski Trio Are Lucky To Be Alive.
COASTGUARDS say three people are lucky to be alive after their Jetski rolled over and started drifting out to sea last night.
One woman and two men were spotted struggling off Southsea beach at 7.15pm on Monday.
After failing to restart the Jetski, the men tried to swim back to land with the craft attached to their bodies while the woman stayed on-board.
All three were close to hypothermia and were only rescued after a man looking out of his hotel window spotted them in trouble.
The Portsmouth RNLI Lifeboat crew raced to the scene to find the jet-ski drifting 500 yards off shore between the War Memorial and D-Day Museum.
RNLI spokesman John Feltham added:
'They were very lucky someone had spotted them because they had no way to raise the alarm.
It was getting dark and they would have been in a life-threatening position because they were a long way out from shore.'

24th August : Extremelives Link With Sony Ericsson.
During August, 30,000 new Sony Ericsson customers are being given the opportunity to redeem a free extreme sports experience through the national coaching network www.extremelives.co.uk and Jetskiing is one of the sports on that list!
As the number of extreme sports increases annually, Jetskiing faces competition in an ever more saturated leisure industry.  Extremelives are looking to tackle this problem head on by encouraging new participants into the sport through a number of brand promotions and special offers with leading high street names.
To celebrate the launch of their K800i, Sony Ericsson customers purchasing the phone from an Orange store will receive a voucher entitling them to a free extreme sports experience in one of the 13 sports on offer.
Niall Cluley from Extremelives explains:
"The K800i is a fantastic product for us to be associated with.
It's one of the first mobile phones that will actually capture quality image and videos with its cutting-edge technology - perfect for capturing you and your mates on the water!
"Promotions such as this with leading consumer brands are enabling Extremelives to convert previously untapped audiences to extreme sports and so ensure that jetskiing continues to grow."
However, attracting people to jetskiing is not Extremelives sole purpose.  Perhaps their main strength is actually ensuring that beginners stick with the sport.  The UK' s largest network of coaches, along with the individual support offered by the national coaching centre on Hayling Island , means jetskiers of all abilities progress as quickly as possible.
Look out for the Sony Ericsson promotion in Orange stores across the UK throughout August.  Plus, coming soon... 5 million MBNA credit card users and 6.7 million Scottish and Southern energy customers will be able to redeem a discount voucher against an Extremelives course.

23rd August : Jet Set.
Simon Haworth, Evening Gazette
A teenager issued a plea for help today after his dream hobby turned into a nightmare.

For ten months Jonathan Robinson worked through rain, sleet and snow to save up to buy a Jetski.
The paperboy, from Acklam, Middlesbrough, did extra rounds and saved birthday and Christmas money until he reached £1,100.
He placed a wanted notice in the Gazette and, with the help of his dad Mark, privately bought the Jetski for £1,500.
Before the ski went on the open sea Mark decided to get it serviced at a garage in Middlesbrough.
It took a month for the garage to service the jet ski and landed the family with a £500 bill.
Jonathan and his father then went out on the jetski but after just 40 minutes it spluttered to a halt.
Mark said: "We had to bring it back out of the sea. My son was very disappointed. I said I would take it back to the garage the next day."
Nine weeks later and, after another £220 bill for further repairs, the family took the jetski back on the sea.
But after just half an hour the same problem happened again.
The garage has now offered to look at the Jetski again without charge but the family say they have lost faith in it and are seeking another expert to help.
Jonathan said: "I'm not very happy it's not working. I have hardly been on it.
"I am not sure if it will ever work. I hope it does."
Mum Jeanette is distraught that all of Jonathan's efforts look like coming to nothing.
She said: "We are devastated for him because his dream has just been quashed.
"We thought it would be a good hobby and sport for him to get into. But since we got it it's just been one thing after another."
Mark said: "My son is totally devastated and he thinks he has just wasted his time saving all his birthday and Christmas money and working so hard.
"My only course of action is to give my son his money back because I think it is unfair on him.
"I hope this will not deter him from working hard in the future to get what he wants."
Now the family are hoping someone might be able to offer expert advice to help repair the Jetski.
"We are just hoping that something can be salvaged from this," said Jeanette.
If you can offer any advice on Jetskis to the Robinson family contact Mark on 07961 90 86 86.

9th August : Jetski Police Team Patrols Coast.
Officers policing the water around the coasts of Kent are patrolling in a two-seat Jet ski from this weekend.
Kent Police said the Jet ski, marked with the force livery, will complement other enforcement vessels.
Officers will tackle anti-social behaviour near the sea and rivers, with one driving and the other gathering evidence in the two-seater craft.
Each year, police deal with beach hut arsons, binge drinking, pier jumping, and speeding off-road and on the water.
Offences have also included Jet skis being used in bathing areas, and in areas protected for wildlife - the new craft will allow officers to engage with other Jet ski users which teams used to find difficult.
Ch Insp Mark Harrison said: "We want people to enjoy themselves at the seaside or on the water.
"But for the minority who ruin other people's fun or ignore restrictions we are more than equipped to deal with you."
He added: "We will be working to stop nuisance behaviour and we'll be looking for stolen craft, enforcing byelaws when required, but also be on hand to offer safety advice."

8th August : Jetskier Dies After Fall At Sea.
A holidaymaker was found dead in the sea after he fell off his Jetski.
The 41-year-old's body was pulled from the water by a crew member of a passing tour boat.
The sailor tried to resuscitate the unnamed man but without success.
Moments earlier the crew of the yacht Elize saw the Jetskier roar past. When they saw him next he was in the water.
The drama unfolded on Sunday a mile off popular Bowleaze Cove in Weymouth, Dorset, where the man had been on holiday with his family.
He was airlifted to the Dorchester County Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
A coastguard spokesman said: "There is some suggestion he fell ill, but we don't know anything for certain and the investigation is now in the hands of the police."

6th August : Teenager Feared Dead After Jetski Accident.
The family of a teenager presumed dead after coming off a jetski in a lake in the west of Ireland were tonight waiting on the shore for his body to be recovered.
The 19-year-old came off the jetski at 5.30pm tonight in Lough Beltra, about 12 miles north-west of Castlebar, Co Mayo.
The teenager is from a family of three children, with one brother and one sister, in the small parish of Islandeady, on the shores of the lake.
Fr Pat Donnellan, the local priest, was tonight at the scene of the accident with the man’s parents.
“We are looking for a body at this stage,” he said.
A friend of the teenager who also came off the jetski tried to save him but was unsuccessful.
The coastguard helicopter from Strandhill, Co Sligo, and a boat crew from Westport were involved in the rescue operation with sub-aqua divers, gardaí, an ambulance, the fire service and Civil Defence.
As light faded the emergency services were preparing to resume the operation at dawn.

6th August : Jetski Accident Victim Dies.
A British man who suffered a serious accident on a jetski while on holiday in Tenerife died four days later in hospital after infection and septicaemia set in.
Garry Kenney, 30, of Fife in Scotland, was holidaying in Playa de las Américas when the accident happened.
He sustained grave injuries to his groin when he slipped on to the jetski’s engine.
His grieving mother told how her son had so nearly missed the holiday altogether and could have been still alive had bureaucracy been slower.
Mr Kenney had applied for a new passport prior to his holiday but had experienced problems because his old one was damaged.
“They did manage to send him a new one though, so he got a flight out two or three days later than planned.
I wish the new passport had never arrived now,” she said.

2nd August : Speeding Fines.
Significant fines have been handed out by magistrates to two Chichester Harbour users who broke the speed limit.
In two separate incidents the Harbour Patrol witnessed the 8 knot speed limit being broken, in the first by a RIB which was traveling at 26 knots for about 3/4 mile and the second was a Personal Watercraft travelling at 37 knots - more than four times over the speed limit.
Speed limits apply to all craft operating within the designated area.
They are generally set to protect the shore line from erosion as well as for safety reasons .
Fortunately, in these cases nobody was injured.
Please ensure that you are aware of any local regulations prior to using your craft.

2nd August : Rogue Jetskier Risk To Dolphins.
Irresponsible jetskiers at Broughty Ferry are putting the River Tay’s dolphins at risk, it was claimed today (writes Lynne Stewart).
Dundee City Council leisure and arts convener Councillor Charles Farquhar is working in conjunction with Tayjet Personal Waterfront Club, who represent responsible jetskiers, to try to ensure the dolphins’ safety.
Cllr Farquhar said, “There are a few totally irresponsible jetski riders who have been causing problems.
“The machines they ride are capable of 80mph, and there is a very real danger they could distress the dolphins using the River Tay.
“People have been enjoying seeing the dolphins all summer, and it would be a great pity if the actions of a few individuals chased them away.
“There are no licence requirements for these craft, and these individuals have a complete disregard for other people using the water. In most cases they will have had no training in the use of these powerful machines, and no safety advice.
“They also come in close to the beach and the water where people are swimming, and this can be a very frightening experience for people who are out there to enjoy themselves.
“We will be continuing to work with Tayjet Personal Waterfront Club, who represent the extremely responsible enthusiasts who use the water safely, the port authority and other agencies to deal with the problem.”
Rogue jetskiers have given cause for consider-able concern over recent months, and their erratic riding is endangering themselves, other jetskiers and swimmers.
It emerged last month that a swimmer from the Ye Amphibious Ancients Bathing Association was almost beheaded by a jetski.
Tayjet have a dolphin, whale and porpoise policy and code of conduct, to ensure the public and marine mammals can share the water safely.
The policy states, “It is recognised that many people at sea for recreational purposes will wish to enjoy encounters with cetaceans.
“However, these encounters pose a potential threat to cetaceans unless they are conducted in such a way as to minimise disturbance.
“Collisions with boats or jetskis may result in injury or death of cetaceans; engine noise may interfere with their acoustic communication, prey detection and orientation systems; and, erratic patterns of movement of boats may cause the animals to suffer stress.”
Tayjet said that if the dolphins are stressed, their natural behavior could be disturbed and result in them moving to other areas, and could disrupt mother and calf bonds.
The club has adopted guidelines to minimise disturbance and maintain a healthy dolphin population.
The code of conduct recommends that jetskiers who encounter dolphins should continue at a slow, steady speed under five knots, avoid coming between mother and calf, allow groups of cetaceans to remain together, and avoid driving through groups of cetaceans.
Councillor Farquhar added that work was expected to be completed this month on a new watercraft channel near the castle, allowing better separation of powered craft and the public using the beach.
The cleaner waters of the Tay seem to have acted as a magnet for increasing numbers of dolphins and minke whales off Broughty Ferry in recent months.
Sightings of several pods of bottlenose dolphins have become a common occurrence, while the presence of minke whales, which can grow up to 30 feet, have delighted residents and holiday-makers alike.
The dolphins started to arrive several years ago, their presence mirrored by decreasing numbers in the Moray Firth.
It is thought pollution and noise from rising numbers of dolphin-watching tourist boats drove the creatures from their habitat there and down the east coast.
Some scientists believe the recent heatwave drew the animals south from colder, more northerly waters, while others say the £140 million Tay clean-up via the Hatton waste-water treatment plant has given the mammals a more welcoming environment.

2nd August : Man Injured In Jetski Accident.
A holidaymaker who sustained serious back injuries in a jetski accident in the Carrick-on-Shannon area was airlifted to Sligo General Hospital area over the weekend.
President Mary McAleese was boating on the River Shannon at the time and members of her group helped in the rescue operation.
The injured holiday maker, a man in his 40s, was jet skiing on the river near Hartley Bridge when the jet ski stalled and collided with a speed boat at around 2p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
The man and the speed boat were part of a group of holiday makers from County Meath.
President Mary McAleese was passing through the area accompanied by a Garda security unit at the time of the accident.
Among the President’s escorts was a member of the Garda water unit, who went to the assistance of the injured jet skier and alerted air support services and the coastguard.
The injured man was airlifted to Sligo General Hospital with what is thought to be serious back injuries.
In response to the accident, Keith Nolan, a resident of the area and member of the Carrick Rowing Club, highlighted the safety concerns associated with jet skis and speed boats on the River Shannon and called for action on the issue.
“Will it take deaths like all things in this country to bring about coherent legislation and adequate safeguards,” Mr Nolan asked.
Mr Nolan, who lives in close proximity to the area where the accident occurred at the weekend, said that speeding was common on the river and that people were not adhering to the speed limits in place.
“The first thing required is a total ban on jet skis and speedboats from narrow and congested parts of our inland waterways and a penalty system for speeding cruisers,” he said.
He added that there had been a huge increase in traffic on the river and said that unless people adhered to the rules in place, further accidents would occur.

1st August : Council Introduces Jetski Patrols.
A council in the North East of England has become one of the first in the UK to introduce 'Baywatch-style' Jetski patrols along its stretch of coastline.
North Tyneside Council has taken delivery of two Jetskis, which will be used as a rescue craft, for general patrols, and to help educate others about their safe use.
Twelve lifeguards have been trained in the use of the craft, which replace the council's outboard powered boats.
Advantages of jet-skis include:
Quicker response to incidents.
They can be maneuvered in shallower water and in small spaces, allowing lifeguards to get closer into cliffs and rocky area.
They can cope more effectively with surf conditions, which often prevented boats from launching.
They are quieter, more economical and produce less emissions than the boats.
They provide an opportunity to engage with Jetski users.
John Harrison, elected mayor, said: "This is good news for the thousands of people who will be enjoying North Tyneside's award-winning beaches this summer.
"It's one of a variety of initiatives that are ensuring our beaches are even safer.
"Not only will the Jetskis enable our team to provide an improved service but it makes it easier for them to engage with other Jetski users and make sure they are behaving responsibly."
Up to 16 lifeguards are on duty along North Tyneside's four award-winning beaches during early summer and up to 22 during the busy holiday period.
This summer the council is running a joint initiative with Northumbria Police called Coastal Watch. It involves beach lifeguards being equipped with police Shopwatch radios to give them a vital link with local officers.
Over the past year the council has undertaken a programme of replacing old and worn lifebelt holders as well as adding new locations.
And new beach safety signage is being erected at the major access points to the borough's beaches. Each sign is based on an RNLI-approved design and includes safety advice, contact numbers and a map of the area.

1st August : Jemima Jetski.
Had she had one of these in 1897 Pembrokeshire heroine Jemima Nicholas would have had an even easier time scaring off those French invaders.

The Fishguard cobbler and her “army” of women marched on the invading French during the last invasion of Britain.
Jemima is said to have helped round up the French troops with nary but a pitch fork when they tried to take over Wales over 200 years ago.
Since 1987 care home warden Yvonne Fox has taken on the role of Jemima.
Dressing up in her finery for all sorts of occasions, often taking her army of similarly attired Welsh women along.
Who better to form part of the welcome committee when Jamie Nicholas (one of Jemima’s distant relatives?) zoomed into Fishguard Harbour after crossing the Irish Sea on a Jetski on Tuesday?
When offered the chance of a victory lap around the bay Yvonne/Jemima couldn’t resist.
It could catch on.
Expect to see an army of Welsh-costumed women on jet skis in a harbour near you soon.
