19th November : Kev Pope in the News.
From Reading Evening Post

Pope crowned British champ.
Kevin Pope, a former Reading Racers junior speedway rider, was among the veteran winners at this year’s British Jetski Championships.
Pope, aged 52, was first in the stand up or ski class, tough enough for anyone in their 20s, let alone an older competitor in the over-30s category.
He went into the last of 12 nationwide rounds at a venue near Milton Keynes, one of his old speedway clubs, needing to win to clinch the title.
“I had won both the open ski races earlier in the day against some of my veteran opposition so I knew a result was on,” said Pope, who trains in the gym or on the water three or four times a week.
And a second place in the ski limited championship, where most of his opposition are in their early 20s, was testament to Pope’s drive and determination.
But it has been a long haul for Pope, who readily admits: “I arrived at the first meeting not fit, not focused and on a slow ski – reason being I was going through a divorce and, with huge work commitments, just being there was a bonus.
“One of my competitors wound me up to a point way beyond gamesmanship so I decided to send my Kawasaki SxR 800 to top tuner Alex Fielder to fettle it.
“This had the desired effect, although it took a couple of races to get the body and mind to the speed of the ski,” added Pope, whose thoughts have now turned to improving on second place in next year’s ski limited championship.

15th November : Jets Marivent Launch New Seadoo GTI.
Jets Marivent, the UK and Eire’s sole importers of Bombardier Recreational Products, will be launching their new Seadoo personal watercraft (PWC) at next year’s London Boat Show in January.

The GTI™ is the first Seadoo four-stroke, entry-level watercraft equipped with a 130hp Rotax 4-TEC engine. It delivers quality, power and a host of premium features, all at a competitive entry-level price.
The GTI and GTI SE, with entirely new deck and hull designs, join an exciting selection of Seadoo PWCs in the 2006 line-up displayed at London Boat Show.
The ever-popular 215hp RXP returns, with the revolutionary technology that made it the Musclecraft Shootout winner for two years running. Alongside it is the RXT, the industry’s only true three-passenger PWC, demonstrating that being big never has to hinder speed and precision.
The GTX returns alongside the GTX Limited, the most luxurious PWC on the market. The GTX Limited now comes with a new Starlight Blue, Titanium Pearl colour scheme and a host of standard features making an unparalleled statement on the water.
In the Sport segment, the Seadoo WAKE is perfect for extreme activities, including wakeboarding, wakeskating, and skiing. The GTX platform is enhanced with a retractable high-rise ski pylon, removable board racks, convex mirrors for higher visibility and exceptional graphics.
The wide range provides something for everyone, and, for the first time, every model includes clean technology. The GTI itself boats a 3-star CARB (California Air Resources Board) emissions rating for 2006.
Amongst others, Jets Marivent’s product selection at the London Boat Show also includes the new Seadoo Speedster WAKE, a sports boat designed specifically for wakeboarding.
For more information on Jet Marivent’s wide range of sports boats, personal watercraft and engines, visit them at Stand S2630 of the London Boat Show, which takes place at the London Excel between January 6th – 15th.

5th November : White Air XSF Extreme Sports Festival.
The 'King of Shaves White Air Extreme Sports Festival 2005' saw the beach at Yaverland on the Isle of Wight transform into an extreme playground attracting an estimated 35,000 spectators over the four days along the beach and at multiple sport venues.
The King of Shaves White Air 2005 focused on promoting the sports and allowing inspired spectators to get involved. Courtesy of Wight Water, X-Isle, Team Traceur and Trampa, workshops and clinics in Surfing, Kite Flying, Parkour and Mountain Boarding were held throughout the event. The keen festival-goers were treated to expert tuition and tips from some of the UK’s finest extreme sports athletes.
The King of Shaves White Air festival brought together UK and international kitesurfers for the RRD KBBT UK Championship finals. With wind, sun, music and ongoing commentary Kiteboarding British Tour took the event atmosphere to the beach. In the men’s Professional series Lewis Crathern emerged as Champion followed by Robin Snuggs in second position and Denzil Williams in third. Despite suffering a knee injury early in the competition, leading lady Jo Wilson maintained her position becoming the 2005 ladies professional KBBT champion with Carrie Bell in second place and Annalisa Dovey in third.
The windsurfers too made the most of Friday’s strong winds and waves at the UKWA Freewave Championships ; watched by thousands of avid onlookers the professional wavesailors pulled off loops, wave rides and big airs in their quest to be number one. In the ladies competition local girl Charlie Connolly took first place.
Saturday saw the start of the UKWA Wightlink British Pro-Am Open Slalom Championships. The marginal wind conditions tested the sailor’s abilities.
Interspersing the Windsurfing on Saturday were the PieRat Jetski display team. Barrel rolls, huge jumps and generally ripping up the water meant there was continuous action on the waterfront.
The 'King of Shaves' Thundercat powerboat racing got off to a spectacular start. The 50bhp boats roared their way across big surf resulting in one boat completely flipping over in heat one, giving the Saturday fans a real close-up of this high octane sport.
On the West of the Island the Saltrock BPSA Professional Surf Competition drew spectators to Compton Bay, one of the UK’s premier surf beaches. The stunning scenery provided an ideal backdrop for professional surfers that included Alan Stokes, Spencer Hargreaves, and local Isle of Wight wild card entries Josh Jupe and Doug Richards, competing for the tour title. South African Reubin Pierce took the honours in good 3ft surf.
Uniting the land based sports and positioned centrally in the main arena the Green Island White Air Extreme Sports Park offered spectacular demos and workshops throughout the day. The cross-sport enthusiasm and ‘have a go’ attitude prevailed as the public, and even the Redbull team, tried their hand at Parkour (free-running). Sunday’s bad weather seemed only to dampen the ramps not the spirits as the Cox’s Apple Big Air competition was replaced by the Coors Indoor Parkour demo by Team Traceur. Demonstrating their flare, stamina and strength the guys proved Parkour deserved a place within the extreme sports community. Back on the ramps the mountain board riders wowed the crowds with massive jumps and big air tricks. Saturday night’s After Dark Party saw Renne Miles and Tom Reed (aka Dr Tom) battle it out for best trick and the £100 prize money. After putting it to the crowd to decide Tom Reids huge backflip set him apart as the winner.
The Redbull Skate and BMX park provided constant entertainment with pro BMXers Kye Forte, World Dirt Jumping Champion, and Bas Keep and pro skaters Pete King and Mattais Nylan showing off their radical moves inspiring the next generation to have a go. Regular open ramp time for the public had the kids flocking to the Red Bull ramps to grind, olly and grab to the beats of the in-house DJ, spurring the skaters and riders to push themselves to their limits.
Within metres of the Red Bull action the Animal Mountain Bike Display Team showcased their talents on two wheels. Grant ‘Chopper’ Fielder battled with the wind to perform some awesome aerial manoeuvres while Martin Ashton amazed the spectators with his incredible balance and precision: crushing a Coke can with his back wheel from a height of 7 ft and bunny hopping over a metre high.
Entertainment throughout the festival provided the perfect soundtrack to the sports on land and in the water. This year White Air had more parties then ever featuring the Deep Blu Riotous Clothing party with Deep DJ’s and Funk-a-Tronic providing the sounds. The King of Shaves White Air party on Saturday night had revellers donning Cowboy hats and partying to the sounds of Vero, Cutback and the Naked Apes. The Coors Main Driftwood Bar, saw more than 20 bands playing throughout the festival, culminating in the Coors Sunday Session Live with top bands Drew the Bees sound system and many more to finish the event in extreme style.

4th November : Two Safe After Jetski Drama In Heavy Seas.
A full-scale search and rescue operation took place in Mount's Bay on Friday afternoon, when two local men on Jetskis were reported missing in heavy seas.
A helicopter was scrambled from RNAS Culdrose and joined the Penlee all-weather lifeboat, the Penlee inshore lifeboat and members of the Coastguard Rescue Team, in searching for the two men, who later turned out to be friends Daniel Haines, of Penzance, and David Bosworth, of Newlyn.
They had been reported missing by a member of the public at the Station House, Marazion, who had seen them go into the sea but not re-emerge.
Coastguard Rescue Team station officer, Tim Stevens, said that members of the team were deployed along the shore line as the helicopter and lifeboats searched the sea.
"We became very concerned for the safety of the two men after we found one of the Jetskis washed up on the beach at Marazion," said Tim. "Then one of the missing men came running up to us and told us he had been mopped up in the surf and heavy swell, and had been washed ashore with his machine. He was very concerned for the safety of his friend, who at this point was still missing."
Tim then sent members of the rescue team to Penzance where the two men had originally entered the water with their Jetskis.
"Thankfully the second missing person had made it ashore and was making a bee-line for Marazion, being also extremely concerned for the safety of his companion," said Tim, who then called off the sea search.
"Both men, who are local and know the sea conditions around here at this time of year, realised their foolishness in going into the water in Friday's heavy seas and were both shocked.
We gave them suitable safety advise and they assured us they would not go into the sea in such conditions again. This is one of life's lessons, but thankfully in this case, all's well that ends well and the two guys were very relieved to see each other again and that they had both made it safe to shore."

3rd November : Hippos Galore!
Reports of pink hippos, red legged turkeys and dog toys are appearing on the beaches of the south coast.
At 6:30 a.m. Monday morning the large container vessel ‘Bunga Pelangi’ lost 4 large containers overboard, 7 miles south east of the Nab Tower (Pilot Station at the east side of the Solent).
The vessel was on passage from Amsterdam to Southampton, and had just turned and was making its final approach to the Southampton Pilot Station when the ship took a heavy roll in the southwesterly swell.
Four containers broke free from their lashings and went overboard from the stern of the ship.
The incident was reported to the Solent Coastguard by Vessel Traffic Services (VTS), the ship’s agents then arranged for a tug to endeavour to recover the containers which had been sighted by the Coastguard rescue helicopter. Sea conditions were too rough to enable a line to be secured.
Geoff Matthews, Solent Coastguard Watch Officer, says:
“We have had reports of pink hippopotamus cuddly toys at Climping, red legged turkey toys at Selsey and a number of dog toys at West Wittering, all we believe to have come from the containers that have sunk from the ‘Bunga Pelangi’.
I am afraid ‘Finders Keepers’ is not correct and our advice is clear, these items if found have to be reported to the Receiver of Wreck, where the owner has the opportunity to have his property returned and the finder the opportunity to a salvage reward provided they have reported their find.
