29th July : Four killed At Beach In Water Sports Turf War!
Two groups of water sports concessionaires on Turkey's Mediterranean coast fought with guns and knives for control of a popular tourist beach yesterday, killing four people.
Turkish police said at least six people were also injured in the shoot-out, including a Russian tourist and a Ukrainian child. One Turk injured in the fight was in critical condition and undergoing surgery at a nearby hospital,
Local official Gunhan Sarikaya told a news agency.
"The exchange on a beach in front of a hotel in Alanya ended after six guns were pulled, at least 34 shots were fired and four people were killed."
Regional governor Alaadin Yuksel said.
"Shocked tourists ran for cover as the fight escalated from vocal exchanges to bullets flying between the two groups."
Sarikaya said neither of the groups fighting had the right to offer their services at the beach.
"This event consisted of a turf war between two unlicensed groups who wanted to have people do water sports," he said.
"Neither of these two groups was given the right to do water sports by the state, but some of them began to use this right illegitimately and began to profit from it."
Alanya is a popular beach for foreign tourists and for watersports concessionaires offering jetski and boat rides.

24th July : Patrols Protect Marine Wildlife!
Kent Police's team of waterborne officers and the RSPCA are teaming up to protect marine wildlife from harassment by powerboats and jet-skis.
Police and the RSPCA Marine Unit will focus on powered craft operating from Neptune Harbour at Herne Bay.
Officers will also patrol the River Stour and Pegwell Bay both on the water and on off-road cycles at the weekend.
The Herne Bay operation aims to protect seals and seabirds while the Stour gives refuge to otters and water vole.
Cause annoyance
Kent Wildlife Trust will be on hand on the River Stour to give out information on its protected species.
The police team of 13 waterborne officers, trained by the Royal Yachting Association, is cracking down on anti-social behaviour on Kent's coast, rivers and estuaries.
A spokesman said marine craft, including jet-skis, exceeding the speed limit can cause annoyance to both fishermen and wildlife.
Police will be working with the Port of Medway Authority to patrol the Medway and Swale estuaries.
Beach safety
Canterbury City Council Water and Shore Patrol will also be conducting high-visibility patrols between Seasalter and Reculver and at Whitstable Regatta.
And coastguards and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution are to carry out a water and beach safety education programme for swimmers and sunbathers.
Coastguards are urging people to keep a close eye on their children at the beach as the school holidays get under way.
East Kent Coastguard Andy Roberts said: "We have been involved in searching for over 100 missing children this year alone.
"Although everyone involved has been rescued, the searches result in a huge amount of worry and stress for parents and children."

22nd July : Council Crackdown On Jetskiers!
A crackdown on the use of jet skis and speedboats at popular bathing spots in west Cornwall gets under way on Friday.
Penwith District Council has received a number of complaints about dangerous activities by jet skiers and is spending £3,000 on extra water patrols.
The enforcement campaign is being run by the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the council.
Jet ski sellers say that they try and advise purchasers how to use the vessels safely.
The co-founder of Cornwall Jetskier club Jason Thomas said: "We show them how to ride the craft. We can do this on dry land but on water people act differently."
Beach safety manager at Penwith District Council Phil Drew said: "We will employ further staff for the summer for the next six weeks and those staff will be out on a vessel or on a jet-ski and will be actively patrolling and making sure people are staying away from the swimming area.
"On the front of the craft there will be four numbers and two letters. You need to take them down and take them to the harbourmaster.
"We can then find out who owns the craft, whether they're trained, whether they're insured - it's like a registration number on a car."
Penwith council says its powers are limited but it is holding talks with local harbour masters and watersports organisations.
A marine surveyor for the MCA at Falmouth, Sid Turner, says cases brought to court are helping to establish more stringent regulations.
He said: "It's been recently ruled in Weymouth that a personal watercraft or a jet-ski is most definitely a ship.
"Under section 58 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 we can actually prosecute anybody who causes the death or serious injury of any person or the loss or destruction or serious damage to any other ship or structure easily up to £50,000.
"That's for the criminal side of it - when you're looking at civil compensation I hate to think what the limit is."

18th July : New PWC Section For Portsmouth Harbour Patrol!
A volunteer patrol operating in and around Portsmouth Harbour has been expanded with a new PWC section.
Portsmouth Volunteer Harbour Patrol (VHP) has been operating with two conventional vessels since it was set up in May last year, but a PWC has just been added to the fleet.
Ten patrolmen and women have been trained to use the new craft and they will distribute leaflets describing local rules and regulations as well as help PWC users who get into difficulty.
Based at Whale Island , the craft will be used initially to target the busy areas off Lee-on-the- Solent and Eastney beach.
Queen’s Harbour Master, Commander Kendall Carter, who oversees the VHP, said: “The introduction of our own PWC patrol has been long awaited and will enhance our patrols significantly in some special areas. It will also reassure the public as a whole that we take safety enforcement on the water very seriously.”
Donations from several marine companies have enabled the new section to be formed. Yamaha UK have supplied the PWC and Barnet Marine Centre Ltd have donated a special hydrohoist platform. Gecko have donated protective headgear and RJP Marine Insurance the necessary insurances.
VHP, which supports the full-time Harbour Patrol manned by specially trained officers of the Ministry of Defence Guard Service, has made a major contribution to maritime safety by providing advice, guidance and help to mariners using the harbour.
The PWC section is looking to expand to 20 people and is seeking new recruits. Volunteers must have the Royal Yachting Association Personal Water Craft proficiency qualification as well as experience in all conditions, including offshore.

18th July : Project Pinky.
With Jetboy reaching an age where he is less dependant on his mum and the Polaris Octane not suited to her requirements, Jetwife wants to get back on the water.

The Kawasaki SXR 800 was identified as the perfect ski for her with its exceptional stability, great turning characteristics and smooth power delivery, but she wanted a little more.
A Kawasaki SXR was transported to Blowsion Kustoms in Oregon with a design brief to transform it into something special for Jetwife in preparation for the British Summer.
On its arrival in Oregon John and the team at Blowsion set about stripping off the old (new) finish, disassembling the craft for the Spray booth and collecting together those parts to be replaced on reassembly.
First composite rail caps were fitted and a Blowsion front cover incorporation a bow eye swapped with the OEM one.
At Blowsion John Dady is the design and paint genius, with a list of riders sporting his designs on their watercraft and helmets that reads as a who's who of PWC including the famous number 37 Kawasaki of the UK's Jordan Fielder and the Royal Air Force Freestyle Superjet of Dan Ashcroft. Whatever you want Blowsion can create a finish to your specification or as in the case of HMS Pinky they can come up with a design for you based on the simplest of information.
As well as the custom paintwork using a combination of vinyl, colour shift paint and hand detailing, Complimentary accessories to add the finishing touch is another of Blowsions specialties and once the paint was complete and the Blowsion signature added a collection of colour co-ordinated parts were fitted.

Stock handlebars were replaced with 4 degree bars and fitted with ODI Ruffian grips with anodized billet aluminum lock rings in purple.
A JSU Racing handlepole spring tensioner was added to lighten the stock pole.
Hood hooks and hood bumper were changed for billet and a purple anodized Hood Latch was added.
Fuel cap and exhaust nozzle were replaced with Blowsion billet and the rear drain plug was replaced with a duckbill.
Stock dash knobs, bow eyes and water bypass outlet were replaced with billet.
JSU Racing rear sponsons were added and side moulding replaced.
To finish, the stitched carbon silver mat kit with magenta trim incorporating lifters and the matching chin pad cover were added.

All this detail was seen before the arrival in the UK, However what made this really special was the unseen HMS nametag on the nose and the cartoon and reference to Jetboy on the hood.
That really is attention to detail!

18th July : Crackdown on Problem Jetskiers!
Jet-skiers causing a nuisance to other users of the River Medway and the Thames Estuary are being targeted by Kent Police during the hot weather.
The force's marine patrol unit will be patrolling the waters after a minority of jet-skiers have been reported to be regularly ignoring safety rules.
Sgt Mark Wigston said they were behaving anti-socially on the water.
Noise, excess speed and annoyance to other craft were some of the complaints they had dealt with, he said.
Marine law
There are strict rules governing safety although it is not imperative for jet-skiers to wear life-jackets or carry flares.
However, a spokesman for Thames Coastguard said all users of pleasure craft were expected to conform to the regulations of the waterways in the same way that other vessels had to.
At a court hearing in Salisbury, Wiltshire, earlier this month, a 26-year-old jet-skier from Dorset was convicted of being "negligent in charge of a ship" after he nearly killed a man in a crash.
Judge Anthony Davies ruled that his machine was a ship under marine law.
Kent Police's marine team have been trained by the Royal Yachting Association so they can patrol rivers and the coast in rigid inflatable boats to tackle anti-social behaviour during the summer months.
Their mission is to advise people if they are behaving irresponsibly or dangerously on the water and, if necessary, enforce the law.

16th July : Amputee's Joy On Finishing Jetski Challenge!
An amputee has successfully completed a 250-mile fundraising trip across rough seas on a jet ski, it was confirmed today.
Matt Browne, who had a leg amputated five years ago, arrived back at Howth, Co Dublin after completing the five-day exhausting trip to raise cash for people with disabilities.
“I’m pretty exhausted, but thrilled to have completed the challenge,” the 52-year-old said.
“At times the sea conditions were very choppy and it was tough going. Tuesday’s journey from Carlingford to Port St Mary in the Isle of Man was particularly demanding. Every wave was like going over a steeplechase fence.”
The fundraiser from Clane, Co Kildare has so far raised €30,000 for the Rehab charity which provides services and assistance for the disabled.
Mr Browne set off on the 250-mile trip from Howth Yacht Club in Dublin last Monday, before stopping off in Carlingford, Co Louth, the Isle of Man and Holyhead in Wales.
The fundraiser said the final stage of the challenge was the longest with the team travelling across the Irish Sea from Holyhead to Howth in four hours.
“The task was made even harder by the fact that I had to remove my prosthetic limb, so balance was difficult. But I trained hard in the gym over the past six months and the hours I spent developing my upper body strength really paid off,” he said.
Mr Browne was accompanied on the trip by his daughter Laura, who is a trained paramedic, his team mates – Dave O’Hora, Oliver Swords and Joe Swords – as well as a number of support vessels.
Before he set off, Mr Browne, who had a leg amputated in 2000 due to a combination of diabetes, bad circulation and years of heavy smoking, vowed to complete the challenge no matter how tough it gets.
He revealed the Isle of Man to Holyhead stage on Wednesday last was hampered by bad weather.
Mr Browne said the team had to return to Port St Mary after just 30 minutes on the open sea.
However, the improved weather conditions over the past two days ensured the fundraisers made up for the lost time and arrived into Howth ahead of schedule.
The fundraiser has organised a number of high profile events for the Rehab charity, which provides services and assistance for the disabled, including an alternative male Rose of Tralee and a 750-mile bus reverse trip around Ireland.

12th July : Project Pinky.
What is Project Pinky?

PP is the codename for the latest addition to the JMUK family.
Over the winter PP has been taking shape in the Northwest United States, specifically Oregon at the home of Blowsion Kolors.
With Jetmans Polaris Octane considered to be too aggressive for the lady, Jetwife made demands for a ride more suitable.

The Kawasaki 800 SXR was identified as the most suited PWC due to its exceptional stability and turning prowess and John and the Team set to work to transform it into something very special.

Blowsion was established in 1989 primarily as a custom painting facility. In the many years since then the business has expanded to offer a full line of aftermarket parts and upgrades, composite accessories and color-matched billet bolt-ons.

6th July : Personal Watercraft Rider Prosecuted!
Collision with another personal Watercraft.
At a hearing yesterday at Salisbury Crown Court, Mr Mark Goodwin, a twenty five year old Weymouth man pleaded guilty to riding his Yamaha Wave Runner in contravention of Section 58 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995.
Prior to this the judge had been asked to rule on whether the Personal Watercraft was a ship in terms of the Merchant Shipping Act. In his ruling Mr Recorder A Davies QC concluded that it was indeed a ship and that the legislation applied.
This prosecution followed a joint investigation by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and Dorset Police Marine Section into a collision on Saturday 15 May 2004 off of Bowleaze Cove in Weymouth during which the rider of another Personal Watercraft, Mr Paul Facer, also from Weymouth sustained serious head injuries.
Sentencing will be dealt with at Dorchester Crown Court on 5th August 2005.
Mr Mark Rodaway, Coastguard Area Operations Manager said ”We welcome this ruling as it enables the MCA, in conjunction with police authorities and other agencies to be more pro-active in promoting the safe operation of these craft. It also clarifies the position for the users of Personal Watercraft and ensures that disregard for the proper operation of them will be brought to the attention of the courts.”
Sergeant Andy Hack of Dorset Police's marine section said: "Following yesterday's ruling it's important that all those using personal watercraft recognise that they have the same responsibilities as all other water users in respect of Collision Regulations and The Merchant Shipping Act. We encourage all users to undertake training under the Royal Yachting Association's syllabus.

4th July : Irish Amputee In Jetski Challenge!
An amputee took to the high seas today, jet-skiing 250 miles from Ireland to Britain.
Matt Browne, who had a leg amputated five years ago, is taking up the challenge to raise funds to help others with disabilities.
The 52-year-old will be stopping at Carlingford in Louth and Port St Mary on the Isle of Man, before crossing busy shipping lanes to Conway Bay and Holyhead in North Wales.
The adventurer will return to Howth on July 8.
And Mr Browne, who had a leg amputated in 2000 due to a combination of diabetes, bad circulation and years of heavy smoking, vowed to complete the challenge no matter how tough it gets.
"It's going to take four or five days and it's going to be tough," he said.
"It's like going up a continuous hill, hitting the waves all the time, and you have to know how to handle them.
There are a lot of body movements. But if something happens we will have support boats on hand.
"If I have to wait until September I'll finish it. I won't be back at Howth until I do. I never back down on a challenge."
The fundraiser, from Clane, Dublin, has so far raised E30,000 (£20,300) for the Rehab charity which provides services and assistance for the disabled.
He will be joined on the trip by his daughter Laura, a trained paramedic, his team mates, Dave Kelly, Dave O`Hora, Oliver Swords and Joe Swords, and a number of support vessels.

The web site features comprehensive product information, dealer locators, second hand adverts and much, much more.
With the highest growth rate for registrations ever, the download section on www.jetsmarivent.com is one of the most visited pages together with the dealer locator, in particular, June has seen a significant rise for the Seadoo Personal Watercraft areas. About twelve percent of the traffic can be attributed to the recent Seadoo 3D campaign carried out, including search-related ads and industry related banners to promote the new 3D concept.
Commenting on the results, Oliver Fröls, President of Jets Marivent stated “We're obviously very pleased with the high number of visitors. Keeping at the forefront of IT solutions has always been a key priority for us and these figures reflect the success of the website and the efforts made to promote Jets Marivent and BRP on the internet. We are specially happy to see that a high percentage of visitors return to our site again and again.”
The web site has received several rewards since its creation, the latest achievement being a third place in the Broker Dealer Category at the Marine Industry Web Awards held at the London Boat Show in January. The website was chosen by the judges for its ease of navigation and volume of relevant information, combined with a fresh and youthful appearance and the exciting collection of imagery available for each product line.

1st July : Plan To Divide Loch In Answer To Jetski Question.
VICKY COLLINS, Environment Correspondent
Ever since the first jetskiers discovered the joy of travelling at high speed around Loch Lomond, their activities have been the source of heated debate.
They also created a major dilemma for Scotland's first national park: the noise and speed of their craft disturbs the walkers, fishermen, sailors, and sightseers who make up the vast majority of its visitors, but they are also the source of a significant income for the area.
The Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park believes it may, finally, have the answer.
Three years after it was created, the park authority has published its first proposals for new restrictions.
If approved, the authority will make it illegal to travel at more than 7mph in almost half the total area of the loch.
Jetskiers and many local groups welcomed the proposals yesterday. However, the Friends of Loch Lomond said they did not go far enough and warned the restrictions would be difficult to police.
Current by-laws impose a 7mph limit around the shoreline and islands – 26% of the loch – with a 56mph limit elsewhere.
Under the proposals, these restricted areas would be extended and the loch effectively divided in three. The central section would be preserved for "quiet activities", protected by a speed limit of 7mph.
The northern boundary for this section would run from just above Luss on the west bank to Cashell campsite on the east, while the southern boundary would stretch from Bandry Point to an inlet just below Ross Priory. It would contain all but one of the loch's islands.
Jetskis and other craft would be able to continue travelling at high speeds in the northern and southern sections.
The current speed limit of 56mph would still stand in these sections, except for the area close to the shore which will continue to be protected by a 7mph limit
.
The changes would also raise the legal age for driving motorised craft from 14 to 16 and make the wearing of life jackets or buoyancy aids compulsory.
he proposals, which will be considered at a meeting of the national park board next week, were based on a series of surveys looking at the impact of high-speed craft on the area.
They found that an outright ban would result in a loss to the area of between £7m and £11m and potential job losses of between 166 and 254.
However, George Boyd, chair of the Friends of Loch Lomond, said economic prosperity should not be the park authority's priority for the area.
He said: "They need to put conservation first because if the environment is spoilt there will be no visitors at all.
"These zones will push the jetskis and speed boats into the southern end of the loch, which is already the busiest and noisiest area.
"They will also be difficult to police: how many of the speed boats moored in the southern end are going to travel for an hour through the zoned area to get to the north when they could get there much quicker if they broke the limit.
"Protecting the central area is a good idea, but how they are going to monitor these proposals I do not know."
However, the Loch Lomond Association welcomed the plan, which it said would enable sightseers, nature lovers, and walkers on the West Highland Way to enjoy their pursuits in peace.
The Royal Yachting Association, the governing body for jetskis and power boats, described the proposals as "very sensible".
A spokesman said: "As long as there are still areas where jetskiers can go and play, our members will welcome it."
If accepted by the park board, the proposals will be put out to public consultation for three months before a final draft is prepared and submitted to the Scottish Executive for approval.
The national park hopes to have them in place for the start of the next boating season in May 2006.
