7th December : Man Wins Water Bike Crash Appeal.
A man jailed for six months after a jet water bike accident which left another man with severe head injuries has won an appeal against his conviction.
Mark Goodwin, from Dorset, had pleaded guilty to being negligent in charge of a ship, but only after a judge ruled the bike could be classed as a vessel.
The 25-year-old, of Osmington, near Weymouth, has now had his conviction overturned in the High Court.
Mr Goodwin's legal team argued that the bikes could not be classed as vessels.
A judge had previously ruled that the bikes were ships in terms of section 58 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995.
But the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Phillips, said on Wednesday: "By no stretch of the imagination could that craft be so described.
"While jet skis are used on the sea in proximity to land, they do not go to sea on voyages nor, we suspect, would they be seaworthy in heavy weather."
Following the High Court decision, the Marine and Coastguard Agency has made an application to appeal to the House of Lords.
Spokesman Captain Jeremy Smart said: "We are concerned by the implications of this ruling which would appear to limit the abilities of enforcement agencies to deal with irresponsible and dangerous activity by some riders of these craft."
'Terrible' decision
The victim of the accident, Paul Facer, told the BBC News website that he was "disgusted" at the High Court ruling.
He suffered serious head injuries when Mr Goodwin's three-seater Yamaha WaveRunner hit his stationary machine off Bowleaze Cove, near Weymouth beach, on 15 May.
The 42-year-old window fitter, from Parkstone in Poole, who has vowed to never use a water bike again, said: "The fact that he pleaded guilty to it but has had it overruled because of a legal technicality is terrible."
During the original court case, the judge had said the sentence should "act as a deterrent to deter others that may be driving in an irresponsible manner".

1st December : Mac Up And Over.
Chris MacClugage, a world champion personal watercraft rider from Lake Havasu City, spent the day Wednesday unlike most residents around the city.

MacClugage, along with a crew from the Discovery Channel, were busy filming for an upcoming episode of a new show called Stunt Junkies.
The episode, which will begin airing its episodes sometime early next year, features MacClugage jumping over three houseboats in the Bridgewater Channel near the London Bridge.
With speeds near 60 mph to make the jump, aerators were located at the other side of the ramp to ensure as smooth of a landing as possible.
