May : European
Championship Round 2 Summary |
|
Jet Sport News 15 |

|
|
The
second round of the 2004 IJSBA Corona Extra European Championship took
place on May 8 – 9 in Imperia, a small city on the Mediterranean
coast in northern Italy.
|
|
One
hundred and eighty riders from 17 European countries, in addition to
riders from the United States and the United Arab Emirates answered to
the invitation from Yves Van Heers and his race staff. |
|
Weather
and water conditions were perfect and allowed the rider to offer a
spectacular show to the crowded beach arena. |
|
Ski
Stock |
|
The
course in Imperia was held in the ocean, and it was the Polaris that
set the pace, with Jimmy Pons winning the 3 motos for his first win at
the European Tour. The Frenchman was ahead of his countryman David
Mayrand, also on a Polaris, and the young Jeremy Poret on a Kawasaki.
The Englishman, Jordan Fielder, winner of the first round in Spain,
came in 4th due to a 9th place in moto 3. In the overall standings,
Pons is ahead of Fielder by 6 points, which should bring out a heated
fight for the title. |
|
Runabout
Limited |
|
In
this class, there is Phil Pope and then the others! Riding his Sea-Doo
XP, just like in Spain, the Englishman dominated all 3 motos,
regularly winning by half a lap each time. His countryman James
Bushell finished three times in second place and ahead of the 2003
IJSBA Amateur Stock R/A 1200 World Champion Angelo Bertozzi from Italy
on his new Sea-Doo RXP 4-stroke. It is to question if is anyone can
keep up with Phil Pope this year? |
Ski
Limited
|
|
The
scenario here is the same as in the Ski Stock class. There are two
Polaris’ taking the first two positions. But everything was up for
grabs for the finishing order. Ludovic Caumont, with his experience in
ocean riding, was the big favorite before the event in Imperia. But
this did not take into account the young talent, Jean Baptiste Botti
from Corsica. After having followed Caumont in the first moto, the
Corsican dominated the next two motos and won his first Ski Limited
race. A very happy Brice Lopez took third, ahead of home favorite
Fabrizio Rossi. The podium was 100% French and the class becomes more
than interesting as the young Andy Carayon and Nick Jacobs from
Belgium, 5th and 6th, have not said their last
words!
|
|
Runabout
Stock |
|
After
its introduction this season in this class, the new Sea-Doo RXP is
doing great. Should be mentioned that the rider is no other than Gimmi
Bosio, simply one of the best riders in the world. Actually, Gimmi
Bosio wile waiting for his Superstock boat still in development, took
on the challenge to compete in the Stock class. Obviously a successful
challenge, because after the victory in Spain, the Italian once again
took home all three motos. However, the job was not easy as Cyrille
LEMOINE, the other factory SEA DOO rider, was on the starting line.
The French finishes second in front of the XP of Belgian Sven PUTZEYS,
finally free from health problems, which had slowed him down in 2003.
Phil POPE, also on a stock boat for the occasion took home fourth
place. Given his absence in the Superstock class since the beginning
of season, it would seem that this title would satisfy Bosio extremely
well. |
|
Women
Ski |
|
What
happened to the European Champion Audrey DUJARDIN is incredible!!! At
the finish line, where she had just lapped Tatiana MERCURIALI from
Italy and virtually won the race, the French rider confused the white
flag, signifying one lap to go, with the checkered flag. She then
stopped while raising her arms as a sign of victory. During this time,
the Italian regained the second position in the third moto and
consequently the first place overall. After everyone pointed and
yelled at her, Audrey re-started to finish the race but it was too
late. The champion was in tears at the finish, but MERCURIALI had won,
to great cheering from her many supporters. Another rider that did not
do much better was Ida ALESSIA. Dominating throughout the weekend, she
missed buoys twice on Saturday. With a penalty of two laps in the
first moto, the Italian still finishes third overall. Seven points
only separate DUJARDIN from Ida. The race for the title in the women
class is more open than ever, even more so as MERCULIALI is not very
far away, and all three on KAWASAKI. |
|
Runabout
Superstock |
|
Just
like he had done in the season opener in Spain, Nicolas RIUS won the
second round in Italy. Everything was the same, but he had to deal
with Franky ZAPATA, very motivated on his KAWASAKI ex factory boat
and, winning moto 1 on Saturday. Zapata, not fond of flying starts, as
opposed to the FIGHTER Rius which, in the two following motos,
succeeded in getting his YAMAHA GP 1200 R ahead of the rest into the
first buoy. It is the surprising Yohan Clavier, which places his SEA
DOO XP, entirely prepared by himself, in third position in front of
the YAMAHA of Mohammed AL-MANSSORI and Teddy PONS. RIUS now has a
comfortable lead on its competitors in the overall standings and
promises to be even more competitive in the future. Business as usual! |
|
Ski
Junior |
|
For
the past few years, the English have dominated the junior class. The
best example is of course Jordan FIELDER, which began his career with
a European title. This was confirmed in Imperia with the domination
again by the English, with Chris WILKINSON winning on a POLARIS Octane
and the World Champion Lewis GOODCHILD on his KAWASAKI. Without
mistakes on the course, Luke BROOKS would have certainly joined his
countrymen on the podium, but he finishes only fourth, behind the very
young Austrian, Nico LASSELBERGER. |
|
Ski
Superstock |
|
Without
a doubt, MAC is back! Certainly upset to have finished only second in
Spain during the season opener, and even more, by being beaten by
Nicolas RIUS, his eternal rival, Chris MAC CLUGAGE paid back by
winning all three motos of the Italian round. Each moto, the American
left his competitors behind and never looked back. Moreover, with
Alberto MONTI, highly motivated in front of its home spectators, the
World Champion, Steven DAULIACH, did not succeed in making it a double
for the Kawasaki Team. The two men finished respectively second and
third, but it was close, and Vincent VILLAT almost split the podium.
The Frenchman finishes only one point from DAULIACH and two from MONTI.
Nice surprise from the young Jean Baptist BOTTI, fifth on his POLARIS.
Not on his best on his stand up, Nicolas RIUS, winner of the first
round in Spain only finishes in sixth place. MAC is now comfortably in
the lead in the overall standings. His competitors need to react very
fast unless they want to see the American win his first European
Championship! |
|
Freestyle |
|
In
the absence of LENZI, MALONE or SICKERLING, the Slovenian Roc
FLOJENCIC took home the freestyle competition. Rok performed a perfect
routine in spite of difficult water conditions. He wins ahead of his
kid brother NAC, for the first time on a European podium. Romain
STAMPERS finishes third. But the true excitement of the weekend was by
the young 12 year old Englishman David Lee STONE who, with his one
meter forty five height, entertained the Italian spectators and won
the amateur class. |
