29th June : Pair's dramatic life-saving rescue
A SPEEDBOAT owner last night thanked the coastguards and volunteers who saved his life after it capsized on its first outing.
Daren Debenham, 23, from Ipswich, and his friend, Richard Baldwin, 24, also from Ipswich, were plunged into the freezing sea on Sunday afternoon when the speedboat capsized off Felixstowe.
They spent about 10 minutes in the water before the Felixstowe Volunteer Coast Patrol Rescue Service rescued the two men, who were both shocked and suffering from mild hypothermia.
“I thought I would get a speedboat, I took it into the water for the first time and then I nearly died,” said Mr Debenham, of Donegal Road.
The Felixstowe Volunteer Coast Patrol Rescue Service, Harwich inshore lifeboat, fishermen and waterbikers all rushed to help the men.
“Several people helped us, including a woman on a Jetski and the coastguard sent a person, also on a Jetski, and he came flying up to us and we held onto a rubber ring for two or three minutes,” said Mr Debenham.

25th June : Oleron 2004 World Offshore Championship A Success!
The eleventh edition of the IJSBA (International Jet Sport Boating Association) World Championship took place during the weekend of June 11-13, 2004, on the island of Oléron in the Charentes-Maritimes region of France.
In addition to about 300 riders who had entered the Enduro, which is reserved for amateurs, 80 riders from thirteen different countries came to this island off the west coast of France in pursuit of this highly coveted title. Among them, the two world speed stars:
Seven-time World Champion Nicolas Rius (YAMAHA) of France and American Chris MacClugage (KAWASAKI), a nine-time World Champion.

Even though both riders went home empty-handed, beaten by the experts as a result of particularly difficult navigation conditions, this 2004 edition is sure to be remembered for a long time to come.

22nd June : Around Britain Jet-Ski Challenge
Eric Blakeley MBE and Paul M Pinel plan to make Jet-Skiing history.
They aim to be the first duo to ski the 2500 nautical miles around the British Isles in a clockwise direction starting from Jersey in the Channel Islands.
They plan to stop in Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm before circumnavigating the country visiting the Isle of Man, Northern Ireland, The Orkneys and the Isle of Wight. They return to Jersey via Herm, Sark, Alderney and Guernsey.
Paul and Eric are to make a television documentary of their Challenge. A date has been fixed for Wednesday 21st July 2004.
Even before we have officially announced our plans, the media have been keen to cover the Challenge.Eric's television background means that the whole Challenge will be professionally filmed. Various stations have been approached with a view to showing it.
For Eric Blakeley, this will be the latest in a long line of Challenges - amongst others he's climbed "The Seven Summits" (the highest peak on each continent including Mount Everest) and swum the English Channel. When he's not away adventuring, Eric works as a journalist for Channel Television in Jersey. The Queen appointed him a Member of the British Empire for services to mountaineering, sport and charity earlier this year.

Paul Pinel is one of Jersey's most accomplished Jet-Skiers. He's notched up impressive trips to the other Channel Islands and France. For Paul, going around Britain has been a long held dream. When he's not on the water, Paul can be found shooting on the .22 rifle range and has had notable successes in competitions. He runs his own business, The Tile Barn, but away from this he is heavily involved with a number of charities. Amongst his many unusual fundraising activities, Paul has spent 24 hours in the Orang-utan enclosure at Jersey Zoo.

We are keen to hear from anyone who would like to assist in any way.

16th June : Missing man is leading windsurfer
A 21-year-old jet-skier presumed dead after going missing off the East Sussex coast is a champion windsurfer, it has been revealed.

Andy Funnell, from Seaford, is thought to have fallen from his jet-ski off the town's beach about 1945 BST on Tuesday.
The search was abandoned after his jet-ski was found on a beach on Wednesday.
Mr Funnell had competed in windsurfing championships all over the world and friends said it was surprising he had not been able to keep afloat.
The alarm was raised when a friend he was with called emergency services to say Mr Funnell had not resurfaced after falling from the machine.
Lifeboat and coastguard teams searched for him and a helicopter was used to scour the area, but the rescue was called off when the jet-ski was found on Wednesday morning.
Police underwater search teams are expected to visit the area were Mr Funnell fell at about 0800 BST on Thursday.
David White, 42, who is a member of the same windsurfing team as Mr Funnell, described him as one of the UK's best talents in the sport.
Mr White said: "He had been doing so well, not only nationally but also internationally.
"He was probably one of the best examples of windsurfing talent that we had."
He said Mr Funnell's ability made it seem strange that he had apparently just fallen from the jet-ski and not stayed above the waves.
"It is so bizarre, this was a bloke that was used to windsurfing in 30ft waves," Mr White said.
He said Mr Funnell had been windsurfing since the age of nine, having been introduced to the sport by his father.
He also said his friend had been in Spain last week competing in a competition for their team Whiteboarders, and had won an indoor windsurfing contest held at a boat show in London earlier this year.
Friends from the windsurfing community are due to come to Seaford on Thursday to hold a vigil on the beach.

Solent Coastguard said the search by coastguard and lifeboat teams had been called off after a jet-ski was recovered on Wednesday.
A helicopter was used to scour the area before the search was ended.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: "The 21-year-old local man is still missing at sea in what appears to be a tragic accident."
A coroner's investigation is due to be carried out and police underwater search teams are expected to visit the area where the man was seen to fall.

2nd June : Seadoo 3D Launched in Ibiza
In the perfect setting of Playa D’en Bossa Ibiza, Jets Marivent launched the latest on-water sensation from Canada, the innovative Seadoo 3D.

European press from 10 countries gathered to try the new on water sensation, a complete re-invention of personal watercraft (PWC) designed as both an introduction to watersports and three new experiences for regular PWC users.
Former World Champion PWC rider Lisa Barsby put the machine through its paces in all 3 of its different formats and was suitably impressed. “This is a great introduction to watersports for anyone who has a pulse!” enthused Lisa. “Even those with PWC experience will find the various ways of riding the 3D a real buzz.”
The press was equally enthralled. Those from lifestyle magazines such as Boys Toys and Stuff found it easy to quickly acquire the skills to enjoy a great new sport, while the seasoned riders found the simple switch from VERT, to MOTO, to KART mode - a genuinely unique experience on water.
The Seadoo 3D arrives in the UK mid June and will be available from most Seadoo dealers across the UK and Ireland. There will also be a chance to see the new 3 dimensional PWC at a number of events around the country starting at the Sportshow in London’s Earls Court.
The 3D can also be seen at the Wakeboard Championships, The Extreme Sports Show, the Southampton Boat Show and various dealer demonstration days over the coming summer.

1st June : Beware Money Laundering Scam
The UK is still being targeted with a money laundering scam relating to the sales of watercraft from online classified pages, here is a reminder for those using online classifieds to sell their PWC.

28th April : Beware Money Laundering Scam
Press Release from Hampshire Constabulary Marine Unit.

Hampshire Constabulary Marine Unit are warning the boating public of a money laundering scheme that appears to be operating throughout the UK concerning the sale and purchase of boats.
In recent weeks the Marine Unit have been contacted by a number of companies who advertise the sale of boats on behalf of vendors, either in magazine or internet circulations.
These advertisements have the price of the boat for sale, and are accompanied by the vendor’s phone number.  The methods used by the conmen vary slightly, but the example below is typical.
The vendor is contacted by potential buyers who offer the full asking price for the vessel. Unsuspecting vendors are obviously accepting these offers. However the fraudsters are sending cheques for a sum in excess of the asking price asking for the balance to be returned to them.  The conman gives various reasons as to why he is sending a cheque for an amount in excess of the asking price and generally relies on the vendor knowing that all is not quite above board, but is willing to ‘bend the rules’ slightly to secure the full asking price for their boat (in some cases above the asking price).
The fraudsters send cheques, which are invariably for considerably more than the item being offered for sale and often appear to be 'Company Cheques’ frequently for non-UK banks. These cheques are forgeries. The fraudster will then pester the recipient to forward the balance by telegraphic transfer system as soon as they show as cleared funds.  There appears to be a problem with the bank clearing system as frequently cheques show to have cleared after 3 days and then on day 4 or 5 the bank will contact the recipient with the bad news that the cheque is worthless.  Our victim is then out of pocket to the amount of the balance and has not sold his boat.
Many such victims of this scam are reluctant to report the fraud as they are aware they were willingly participating in money laundering operation.
Scams such as this have been used for a number of years, but it appears has only recently spread to the boating community.
The chances are that if someone is offering you more than you are asking then it is highly likely to be a ‘con’.
