November : Cypriots Jetski Death Trial Adjourned. |
| The trial of two men
charged over the death of a British schoolgirl in a Jetski accident in
Cyprus was adjourned yesterday.
|
| Hannah Sutton, 16, was
killed when her boyfriend, James Dudley, also 16, crashed into her
while they both rode Jetskis at the resort of Pissouri last
summer.
|
| Hannah, from Alderley Edge,
Cheshire, died of head injuries.
|
| James is from Colwyn Bay
and both were students at the private Rydal Penrhos School in the
town.
|
| Christakis Ioannou, 46, and
Aristos Ioannou, 30, were due to appear at Limassol District Court
charged with allowing the youngsters to drive the Jetskis without a
licence.
|
| The older man is the owner
of Kris Water - a beachside Jetski hire firm. The younger man,
believed to be his son, runs the business for him.
|
| It is alleged they failed
to check whether the teenagers were old enough to hire Jetskis.
|
| The minimum age in Cyprus
is 18.
|
|
They also allegedly failed to
get either teenager to sign a disclaimer form.
|
|
If found guilty they face a
maximum sentence of three years in jail and a £3,000 fine.

November : £30,000 Bill For Family As Injured Jetski Boy
Returns To UK. |
| A 14-year-old boy seriously
hurt in a sea scooter crash on a Caribbean holiday has returned to the
UK.
|
| Matt Hewitt, from Measham
in Leicestershire, was riding a personal watercraft with his uncle
when it hit a boat off St Lucia three weeks ago. He suffered brain
damage and doctors feared he would not survive.
|
| But this week he was well
enough to fly back home with his father and was taken to the Queen's
Hospital in Burton to continue his recovery.
|
| His mother Gillian said:
"He was hospitalised in St Lucia for six days and when I last saw
him he was unresponsive, unconscious and on a ventilator, being taken
out to an air ambulance to fly to Martinique. So to see him sitting
here now playing on a playstation is just beyond anything I could ever
have imagined."
|
| But his father Richard said
there had been problems with insurance: "Basically we don't stand
anywhere. The day after the accident we informed the insurance company
that Matthew had had an accident, and within half an hour to an hour
of me getting back to the hospital they told me I wasn't covered. So
basically eveything that's happened now, we've had to do by
ourselves."
|
| He said the total coast
would be just short of £30,000.
|
| The holiday had been
intended to be a joint celebration of the couple's 40th birthdays:
"It was just an horrific end to an absolutely brilliant
holiday," Mr Hewitt added.

November : Jetski Death Trial Begins. |
| TWO men charged over the
death of a schoolgirl from Cheshire in a Jetski accident are to go on
trial in Cyprus.
|
| Hannah Sutton, 16, was
killed when her boyfriend James Dudley, also 16, crashed into her
while they both rode Jetskis at the resort of Pissouri in Cyprus last
summer.
|
| Hannah, from Alderley Edge,
died from massive head injuries.
|
| Christakis Ioannou, 46, and
Aristos Ioannou, 30, will appear at Limassol District Court to face
charges over her death.
|
| Both men have been charged
with a single count of allowing the youngsters to drive the Jetskis
without a licence.
|
| The older man is the owner
of Kris Water - a beachside Jetski hire firm, and the younger man,
believed to be his son, runs the business for him.
|
| It is alleged both had
failed to check whether the teenagers were old enough to hire Jetskis
- 18 in Cyprus.
|
|
And they also allegedly
failed to get either teenager to sign a disclaimer form, to say the
riders are competent, acknowledge the dangers, and admit liability in
case of an accident.
|
|
If found guilty they face a
maximum sentence of three years in jail and a £3,000 fine - but legal
experts in Cyprus said it is highly unlikely either man will face
custody.
|
|
Both men are still running
the same business.

November : Londoners Pay The Price For Water Speeding. |
| By Nishan
Wijeratne
|
| Essex Police
has given a strong warning to those who speed on the county’s
waterways after two men from east London received substantial fines at
court.
|
| Two cases at
Colchester Magistrates Court on Wednesday 15 November demonstrated the
force’s commitment to eliminating anti-social behaviour from
Essex’s waterways as well as reducing the possibility of serious
injury.
|
|
Mark Macey had been using a Personal
Watercraft, sometimes known as a Jetski, to use along the coast of
Clacton near to Martello Beach in July when he was stopped by marine
police after exceeding the speed limit.
|
| He was recorded
travelling at just under 35 knots in an eight-knot zone. He appeared
at court and pleaded guilty to the offence for which the 35-year-old
man from Prospect Road in Hornchurch received a £500 fine and was
ordered to pay £200 costs.
|
| Stuart Wheatley
was reported for speeding in Ray Creek in Brightlingsea in August when
he too was stopped by police and reported for a speeding offence.
|
| He was recorded
travelling at 30 knots in an eight-knot zone. The 30-year-old man from
Forum Close in Bow failed to attend court and, in his absence, was
handed a £650 fine and ordered to pay £350 costs.
|
| Marine
Investigating Officer, Dc Simon Lofting, said:
|
| “This sends
out a message to all waterway users in the county that we will
prosecute speeding offenders in a bid to minimise the potential for a
crash.
|
| We will help
enforce bye-laws to promote safe fun and those who choose to ignore
them will find that their activity ends up being a very expensive day
out.”
|
| Members from
the Clacton Watercraft Club supported Tendring District Council’s
prosecution which used evidence gathered by Essex Police.
