16th May : Peers Pan Idiot Skier.
The Guernsey Skiers' Association has distanced itself from the jet skier who jeopardised safety at the powerboat weekend.
The dark jet ski had shot across the path of the leader in race one of the Condor Ferries Liberation Grand Prix on Saturday, forcing Bat out of Hell to throttle back to avoid a collision.
'We are a newly established club and we already get a lot of negative comments from the public, so the last thing we want is bad press like this,' said GSA vice-president Andy Ewin.
'We have no idea who the individual involved was. If we did know who it was, we would make sure they knew it was not on.'
After the race, driver Cliff Smith labelled the jet skier an idiot who would have jeopardised future racing in Guernsey had they been hit.
But Robert Dodsworth, of the Guernsey Powerboating Association safety team, saw the incident and does not believe the jet skier meant any trouble.
'I firmly believe the person did not know the race was going on. I don't think they were taking the mickey, because as soon as they realised what was going on, they took precautions to make sure nothing else serious happened.
'If he had stopped after looking round and seeing them coming, it could have been a different story. They did the right thing and got out of the way.
'He or she didn't come back to try and cause any more problems.'
For future powerboat events in Guernsey, the GSA and the GPA safety team will look into the use of water-based marshals.
'If we are to have events like this going on in Guernsey, our association would like some of our people out there on jet skis to marshal,' said Mr Ewin.
'That way we can ensure the same doesn't happen again with any other jet skier. From associations we have spoken to in the UK, this seems to be commonplace and works well.'
Mr Dodsworth agreed: 'It seems likely the races will go ahead again next year and we would welcome the help of their newly formed organisation for the event.'
Harbour master Peter Gill said unless someone could identify the jet skier, there was nothing else that could be done.
'They can get up to speeds of 90km/h, so it's very hard to track them. They don't have an on-board radio so it's not really that easy to communicate.'

2nd May : Seadoo "Watercraft Of The Year".
Seadoo GTI and Seadoo GTI SE Win “Watercraft Of The Year”

Seadoo’s latest range of personal watercraft (PWC) has been named 2006 “Watercraft of the Year” by Watercraft World magazine.
This is the seventh time that a Seadoo PWC has won this coveted title, awarded by one of North America’s leading PWC publications to the PWC that best defines new standards in innovation, long-term impact and market appeal.
Jets Marivent, sole distributor of BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products) in the UK and Eire, held the UK launch of the GTI and GTI SE at the London Boat Show 2006 in January.
“We are very proud of this recognition,” commented Mark Rowley, Product and Sales Manager at Jets Marivent. “With new deck and hull designs together with a host of luxury items fitted as standard, the GTI and GTI SE have set a new benchmark for entry-level craft in the industry.”
The GTI is the first Seadoo four-stroke, entry-level watercraft equipped with a 130hp Rotax 4-TEC engine.
Both PWC seat three passengers and are fitted with Seadoo technologies that were previously only available on higher-end luxury performance models.
These include Off-Power Assisted Steering, a Closed-Loop Cooling System and a D-Sea-Bel sound reduction system.
The GTI SE also sports a number of extra features including a digital speedometer and 16-function digital information centre, and Seadoo Learning Key to help new riders.
The entire 2006 range of Seadoo watercraft include clean air technology. The GTI and GTI SE also boast 3-star CARB (California Air Resources Board) emissions ratings for 2006.

2nd May : JS&PW Where To Launch Guide.
Jet Skier & PW Magazine is soon to publish the 2006 ‘Where to Launch, Hire and Train Guide’ which will be given away free with the July issue of the mag.

To ensure this information is as current as possible we ask that you all log onto www.jetskier.co.uk and click on ‘Launch’ in the top right hand corner.
When you get to the boatlaunch site check the slipway box in the right hand menu. Make sure no other boxes are checked.
You can use the + /- sign to zoom in/out on your area until the slipways signs start to appear.
Hold the mouse down to drag the maps to find the area you require. When your mouse is on the slipway you want, the name will appear.
Click on ‘read more’ and then you will see the information for that slipway or launch site. If you find any details you know to be incorrect, click on ‘edit this page’, just under the map.
The site works in the same way as wikipedia, in that you, the user, can edit the listings. This means that you can change the prices, or any other information that you want.
If there are sites in your area which say it is unknown if they are ‘Jetski Friendly’ then please edit those too. This is particularly important as only ‘Jetski Friendly’ sites will be selected for the guide. Some may have changed from ‘Yes’ to ‘No’ and visa versa.
If everyone helps in this it will make it the ‘all singing, all-dancing guide’. Many thanks for your assistance in this – and look out for the guide!
