| 30th January : Warning Of Ugandan Based Fraud Targeting Marine Industry. |
| Information contained in this bulletin was correct at time of issue. Always verify with Police prior to taking action. |
| Date 30th January 2006 |
| A Ugandan based company has recently approached a Christchurch based marine engine supplier in an attempt to purchased twelve brand new outboard engines. |
| The local company were suspicious and have kept in regular contact with the Dorset Police Marine Section in relation to the various fax and e-mail correspondence. |
| On Friday 27th January 2006 a cheque was delivered to the supplier asking for the engines to be shipped to Uganda but having made enquiries with the Alliance and Leicester on who’s account the cheque was drawn. |
| It has been confirmed that the cheque was a counterfeit and so the local supplier would have lost all of the engines in this long and protracted deception. |
| All suppliers of marine equipment are warned to be on their guard when dealing with transactions that seem just too good to be true. |
| If you have been contacted in a similar way please contact the Dorset Police Marine Section on the below telephone number. |

| 27th January : Security Of Craft A Top Concern For BRP. | |
| Jets Marivent UK, the UK and Eire’s official importer and distributor of Seadoo Personal Watercraft and Sport Boats, is quick to ease British owners’ minds about the security systems in place which should make them ‘less attractive’ to thieves. |
|
| This follows a boatUS report last week that Seadoo personal watercraft were in the top ten list of stolen marine vessels in the United States. | |
| Since 1995, all Seadoo Personal Watercraft and Sports Boats have been fitted with a digitally encoded security system (D.E.S.S), which utilises a digitally encoded microchip in the lanyard, uniquely programmed to each watercraft allowing the engine to be started. | |
| Each craft’s engine management system contains an ECM (Engine Control Module) which communicates with the microchip in the key in order to identify that the key in place is the correct one for the craft. | |
| In much the same way as an immobiliser system fitted to a car, the engine will not start without this confirmation. | |
| Only authorised Seadoo Dealers using a Vehicle Communication Kit and specific software on their PC can program the key. | |
| “PWCs are smaller and more maneuverable than other marine craft, which is why it is important to develop reliable security systems” says Paul Francis of Jets Marivent UK. | |
| “It may therefore be that the security and safety systems BRP build into their craft contribute to the fact that they are the lowest on the list of stolen personal watercraft in the US. | |
| We are also pleased that Seadoo is currently the only Personal Watercraft to have a security system as standard which is recognised by a major marine insurer, ‘Mardon Marine’, giving Seadoo Customers preferential terms on their insurance premiums”. | |
| Continuing with security in mind, BRP have also just launched two new compact alarm systems for use on all types of boats and outboard engines. | |
| The alarm will sound if attempts are made to unhook the engine, whilst the smart electronic ‘tow away’ sensor, which is able to identify a false alarm such as that caused by extreme weather conditions or a dramatic change in tide, will continue to keep the craft from being moved without the owners knowledge. | |

| 18th January : Jetski Crash Inquest. |
| A teenager wept yesterday as he told an inquest how his girlfriend died after their jetskis collided off a beach in Cyprus. |
| Hannah Sutton, 16, suffered catastrophic brain damage in the accident last summer. |
| The former boarding school pupil from Alderley Edge, Cheshire, was visiting her mother, Lynn, who teaches at a British military base on the island. |
| On Aug 2 she and James Dudley, now 17, from Colwyn Bay, north Wales, decided to hire jetskis at the resort of Pissouri. |
| Neither was aware that they were legally too young to ride the craft. |
| The owners failed to check their ages and gave them less than a minute's instruction on how to control the machines, the inquest heard. |
| James sobbed as he recalled how the accident happened within a short time of the couple setting out into the bay. |
| "She came round from turning in front of me and then stopped," he said. |
| "I stopped accelerating and tried to turn away from her, but I realised I couldn't turn without accelerating. |
| "I was going towards her. We were really close. I was afraid of hitting her. |
| "I leaned over and turned around to try and avoid her, but then I hit her. |
| "I thought I'd just gone off the back of her jet ski but I landed the other side. |
| "I turned round and she was in the water a couple of metres away from the jetski. |
| "I was really confused. I jumped in the water and swam to her. I tried to lift her up but found she was not conscious. |
| "I yelled and screamed in the water while I was trying to swim her back to the jetski, trying to get her back on." |
| He said lifeguards then took over the rescue attempt, carrying Hannah back to the beach. |
| James told the inquest: "When I got there the lifeguards were trying to resuscitate her. |
| "They were yelling at me, saying it was stupid." |
| Hannah was pronounced dead at Limassol General Hospital. |
| John Pollard, the south Manchester coroner, said he was shocked at how easily such "dangerous machines" could be hired to tourists with "totally unsatisfactory" instructions. |
| Recording a verdict of accidental death, he said he would be urging the Foreign Office to do all in its power to help prevent a similar tragedy. |
| Hannah's boyfriend was later fined £2,008 by a district court after he admitted causing her death. |
| At yesterday's inquest in Stockport, Greater Manchester, Hannah's father, Stephen Sutton, a watersports instructor, said she had been aware of the inherent danger of jetskis. |
| After the hearing Mr Sutton described his daughter as an "intelligent, sensible, outgoing, gregarious, loving, caring young lady". |
| He said he did not blame James for his daughter's death. |
| Mr Sutton added: "They had a good relationship and we know he regrets the incident, which will live with him for the rest of his life." |

January : PW Club Chairman Honoured. |
|
| At the recent Maritime Engine & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEEMA) annual dinner, Gary Slater of Clacton Watercraft Club was presented with the Mic Randle Safety Memorial Award for 2006 for his outstanding contribution to watercraft safety and training. | |
| Gary founded Clacton Watercraft Club in 2003 when a council scheme to close the areas slipways threatened his favourite launch site at Martello Bay. | |
| Gary persuaded the local authorities to allow him to work with them to overcome the problems they faced from irresponsible users and a temporary reprieve was granted. | |
| Today Martello Bay slipway is a hive of activity and the close working relationship established between the club and authorities now only involves discussion of continued training and improvements for members. | |
| Furthermore Gary has taken his knowledge and experience and shared it with clubs and authorities across the length of the country. | |
| Gary is also the first recipient of the prestigious annual award not employed in the marine industry. | |
| Gary Commented “this award is recognition for the hard work and achievements by clubs across the country working to promote and provide a safe environment for all water users”. | |
| Gary is pictured receiving the Mik Randle Memorial Award from Dave Pougher Divisional Manager Marine, Yamaha Motor UK and Chairman of the Personal Watercraft Partnership at the Britannia International Hotel, London. | |

| Jets Marivent launch new Seadoo GTI and 2006 PWC range at London Boat Show. |
|
| Jets Marivent, the UK and Eire’s sole importers of BRP products, are launching their new Seadoo personal watercraft (PWC) at the London Boat Show, alongside the rest of the 2006 BRP line-up. | |
| The GTI is the first Seadoo four-stroke, entry-level watercraft equipped with a 130hp Rotax 4-TEC engine. It joins popular craft such as the Seadoo GTX and WAKE to deliver quality, power and a host of premium features, all at a competitive entry-level price. | |
| As well as featuring new deck and hull designs, the GTI and the GTI SE come equipped as standard with Seadoo technologies previously only available on higher-end luxury performance models. These include Off-Power Assisted Steering, a Closed-Loop Cooling System and D-Sea-Bel sound reduction system. | |
| The GTI and GTI SE join an exciting selection of Seadoo PWCs in the 2006 line-up displayed at London Boat Show. The ever-popular 215hp RXP returns, with the revolutionary technology that made it the Musclecraft Shootout winner for two years running. Alongside it is the RXT, the industry’s fastest three-passenger PWC, demonstrating that being big never has to hinder speed and precision. | |
| The GTX returns alongside the GTX Limited, the most luxurious PWC on the market. The GTX Limited now comes with a new Starlight Blue, Titanium Pearl colour scheme, making an unparalleled statement on the water. It features almost every technology available, and boasts eighteen specifically designed accessories, including a waterproof mobile phone case and a built-in, hand-held GPS system. | |
| In the Sport segment, the Seadoo WAKE is perfect for extreme activities, including wakeboarding, wakeskating, and skiing. The size and agility of the PWC provides a wide variety of movement and, importantly, minimal time spent in the water after falls! Designed following in-depth consultation with industry leaders themselves, the GTX WAKE platform is enhanced with a retractable high-rise ski pylon, removable board racks, convex mirrors for higher visibility and exceptional graphics. It also features a reboarding step, a large reboarding platform and top of the range storage facilities. | |
| The wide range provides something for everyone, and, for the first time, every model includes clean technology. The GTI itself boats a 3-star CARB (California Air Resources Board) emissions rating for 2006. | |
| Jets Marivent’s product selection at the London Boat Show also includes the new Seadoo Speedster WAKE, a sports boat designed specifically for wakeboarding. For more information on Jet Marivent’s wide range of sports boats, personal watercraft and engines. | |
