Sailing - Aquabiking on Watersports World
In this week's one-hour round-up of top watersports stories, we start in London for the latest Clipper launch, Glasgow Clipper, with Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Miss UK, Nicola Jolly.
Then to one of the best offshore racing stories shot in recent years, the BMW Round Ireland Race. Last year we showed the experience of racing aboard the V60 02, hammering for line honours and a new record, but what of the spread of entries, the middle-sized and smaller boats, battling for the big trophy and the top honour, overall handicap victory? This comprehensive edit from Dublin-based Lotus Films tells the complete story, with Ireland's beautiful coast as the backdrop. Of all the offshore racing films we've seen in recent years, we think this is one of the best. It makes you want to sign up for 2006...
Next to the Swiss Alps for the aquabike European championship.
And finally, an update from Qatar where the big multis are preparing for the Oryx up. Tracy Edwards talks us through the four entries, and wonders how Olivier de Kersauson's mega trimaran will compete against the big cats. We'll have full updates as the race progresses.

19th January : 3D Boat Of The Year.
In 2004, BRP reinvented the personal watercraft and in recognition of this industry-leading achievement, Boating magazine named the Seadoo 3D “Boat of the Year” (December, 2004 issue).
As “Boat of the Year”, the Seadoo 3D also makes history for being the first personal watercraft to win this important award. After testing more than 150 new boats in 2004, the Boating magazine editorial staff chose the Seadoo 3D as the boat that best fits their criteria for “redefining powerboating”.
“Quite simply, there has never been any vessel like the Seadoo 3D on the water,” said Boating magazine Editor-in-Chief, Randy Steele. “And as much fun as the remarkable 3D is to operate, this craft is first and foremost a capable and serious boat because of its unique versatility. That’s why the Seadoo 3D is our choice for the 2004 ‘Boat of the Year’.”
The Seadoo 3D is the first watercraft to offer its rider multiple experiences, by transitioning between five very different and unique riding modes in mere seconds. These modes include VERT, MOTO, KART, and new for 2005, SHOQ and KNEE. The innovative design of the Seadoo 3D is specifically targeted to attract the video game generation by capturing live action, excitement and quick-change capabilities at an entry-level price.
The Boating magazine “Boat of the Year” award comes on the heals of Men’s Health naming the Seadoo 3D number two in their “Top 100 New Products for Men” in the magazine’s 2005 Tech Guide (December 2005). The 2004 awards for the Seadoo 3D are accompanied by Watercraft World magazine’s “Watercraft of the Year” award for the Seadoo RXP; the industry’s only two-passenger musclecraft boosting 215 HP.
“At BRP we are very proud that by being named the 2004 ‘Boat of the Year’, the Seadoo 3D is recognized as a redefining boat,” commented Seadoo and Bombardier* ATV Director of Communications, Louis Levesque. “At BRP, product is king — and the Seadoo 3D is the perfect example of this core philosophy. The Seadoo 3D reinvents what a watercraft is and is capable of. It is also the key to spur re-growth in the watercraft and marine industry because it offers an exciting and affordable new way to introduce young adults to recreational boating.”
Boating magazine’s “Boat of the Year” award began in 1992. Their criteria for “Boat of the Year” is that each recipient must be more than simply the most outstanding boat in its class. It may not be the most expensive boat, the fastest boat, or the one with the most technical features. Instead, “the Boat of the Year” has successfully pushed the envelope. As such, the Boating magazine “Boat of the Year” often creates a new category and sets new standards that raise the expectations of boaters everywhere — as does the Seadoo 3D watercraft.

18th January : IJSBA Lowers Competition Minimum Age.
The International Jet Sports Boating Association (IJSBA) announced today that the Junior Ski competition age limit is lowered to 10-years-old.

“I am excited about the opportunity to get the younger riders involved in our sport at an earlier age, ” said IJSBA Managing Director Biorn Tangeland.
“Several countries allow 10-year-old racers, but they have not been able to participate at World Finals because of the previous age limit of 14,” continued Tangeland.
This change affects Freestyle and three Junior classes in the ski division only. (Juniors are not allowed to race in the Runabout class.)
They are; Junior Ski 10-12 Stock, Junior Ski 13-15 Stock and Junior Ski 13-15 Limited.
Riders from these classes will be eligible to compete at the World Finals.
Additional information will be available in the near future regarding qualifying for World Finals and registering to participate at regional races.

13th January : Sir Matthew Pinsent gets back on the water!
Olympian and Four Gold Medal winner, Sir Matthew Pinsent, paid a visit to the Yamaha Stand S2610 to cast an eye over the NEW for 2005 Yamaha WaveRunner VX Deluxe.

Matthew may have announced his retirement from professional rowing recently, but this man will just not stop. He intends to take to the water again and the stylish new WaveRunner VX Deluxe is his first choice. This high-performance watercraft can carry up to 3 riders and has a few more luxuries than the average personal watercraft, including mirrors, reverse gear and the Yamaha remote security system with ‘L’ mode.
Mindful of safety and as dedicated as ever, Matthew intends to take the RYA PWC proficiency test, so that he and his family and friends can enjoy the Yamaha WaveRunner over the coming months. Matthew said “I just can’t sit still. When you’ve had the sort of training schedule I’ve had for so many years you need to be planning what to do next. I’ve already got a Yamaha motorcycle, so it was a natural progression to have the new Yamaha WaveRunner ready for the summer. I can enjoy the water but have an engine doing the work this time and when I feel confident I intend to tow my friends on water skis or wakeboards – we plan to have a great time.

9th January : Pope Gives Yamaha his Blessing.
Yamaha Marine News
After watching Nicolas Rius storm to another title win in the European Superstock Runabout class aboard a Yamaha GP1300R, British legend Phil Pope has come to the conclusion that if you can't beat them you should join them.
For the 2005 campaign 'The Pope' will therefore be making the switch from his long term ride to mount a championship challenge aboard a race tuned Yamaha GP1300R.
Pope, who recently took delivery of two GP1300R's, has a long list of British, European and a World title to his name. He had a successful season in 2004, but feels that to be able to compete at the highest level in the Superstock class a change of machine is required.
A British connection already exists at the top level of racing GP1300R's with ex-pat and top spannerman Lee Manvell preparing the Emirates Racing craft that Rius races.
It was after another stunning performance by Rius in Mirandela, Portugal, that rumour started about several British riders making the switch to the Yamaha craft. With Pope making the commitment first, it's thought that several other British riders may soon follow suit.

7th January : Seadoo Sport Boats 2005 Lineup.
Schroders London Boat Show 2005
Stand No. S2630

Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) is introducing the new 2005 line of Seadoo sport boats. The new line-up includes additional power options, cleaner engine technology, quality refinements and one completely new model. With the 2005 craft boasting even more power and new features, BRP is once again proving its industry-leading innovation.
New for 2005 is the Seadoo CHALLENGER 180. Combining impressive performance with a competitive price tag, the CHALLENGER 180 is predicted to do well in the popular 18-foot recreational runabout category. The Seadoo CHALLENGER 180 offers an open cockpit configuration and will be available with two engine options, the 185 HP supercharged 4-TEC or the intercooled 215 HP supercharged 4-TEC. Capable of carrying eight people, the CHALLENGER 180 is designed specifically for recreational boating and will be priced lower than the popular, high-performance UTOPIA 185.
Several models are being upgraded in power to the 185 HP supercharged 4-TEC four-stroke marine engine or the four-stroke intercooled 215 HP supercharged 4-TEC. Advancements in sound reduction and on-water performance have also been made to the 2005 line.
“The new, more powerful engine options in several 2005 Seadoo sport boats broaden the appeal and choices of jet power to boaters,” said Chris Dawson, Vice President, Marketing, BRP. “The new CHALLENGER 180 has an 18-foot platform with cockpit area comparable to that of a 20-footer.
It will be offered at an affordable price to broaden the appeal of the Seadoo sport boat line to consumers,” he added.
The SPORTSTER is now available with three engine options including the four-stroke intercooled 215 HP supercharged 4-TEC that provides unrivalled exhilaration with its performance. Responsiveness is an understatement with the new SPORTSTER SCIC (Super Charged Intercooled) – a sport boat with the perfect balance of power and handling in new racing colors and graphics.
The SPEEDSTER 200 has been packed with twice the power, with two power options in 2005. With 370HP harnessed in twin 185 HP supercharged 4-TEC four-stroke engines or 310HP in twin 155HP configuration, this sport boat is the performance king of jet power sport boats.

7th January : Two New Experiences for Seadoo 3D.
Schroders London Boat Show 2005
Stand No. S2630

The unique, revolutionary PWC from BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products), the Seadoo 3D now offers 5 spectacular riding positions.
Launched in 2004, the 3D received great acclaim due to its ability to offer multiple experiences and its affordability makes it ideal for new riders. BRP have now taken this innovation one step forward.
Ideal for beginners to the sport, the entry-level 3D now boasts 5 distinctly different riding positions, to offer riders a unique and thrilling ride every time they hit the water. In addition to the existing Base model which includes the ‘KART’, ‘MOTO’ and ‘VERT’ positions, BRP have now created a Premium model which also features the ‘SHOQ’ and ‘KNEE’ positions, to offer yet another 2 dimensions to PWC riding.
The Seadoo 3D utilises modularity to turn one watercraft into five distinctly different riding modes. Each mode bears its own unique handling characteristics and provides its own uniquely challenging experience. When a rider wants a change of pace on the water, or riding conditions change during the day, he or she can simply switch modes to the desired experience or handling configuration.
The Seadoo 3D in SHOQ mode is a new way to experience a watercraft with the rider standing in a vertical position with the handlepole locked solidly in a fixed position by the SHOQ.
The SHOQ is a three-position adjustable strut that attaches to the top of the hood and the bottom of the handlepole below the Triple Point Steering™. The SHOQ also incorporates a dampener to smooth out the chop. The Seadoo 3D in SHOQ mode allows the rider to stand vertically yet use the handlepole for leverage, gaining maximum handling performance.
The Seadoo 3D in KNEE mode is something entirely new to watercraft and evokes sensations of an engine-powered kneeboard. The KNEE mode allows the rider to manoeuvre the 3D from a crouched position on a specially molded knee tray inserted in the rider tray, supplying padding and a short pedestal for an aggressive ergonomic position. The Seadoo 3D in KNEE mode lowers the center of gravity similar to the KART mode while positioning the rider in a more upright stance. It is designed for maximum comfort and control for high-performance cornering.
The Seadoo 3D in VERT mode offers the rider an athletic experience that is increasingly rewarding as effort is expended, but with a reasonable learning curve. In the VERT mode, the rider stands in a dynamic vertical position similar to surfing, wakeboarding, or skateboarding. The Seadoo 3D in the VERT mode, offers a fairly stable platform with an experience that riders can enjoy quickly, while still offering an intense challenge before fully mastering the 3D.
The Seadoo 3D in MOTO mode brings a motorcycle experience to the water. The retractable switchblade seat unfolds from the handlepole and locks solidly into the rider tray. When the seat and handlepole are locked into MOTO mode, the 3D is transformed into a streetbike on the water in flat conditions or a motocross bike in chop.
The Seadoo 3D in KART mode lowers the rider close to the water surface, giving the experience of driving a high-performance kart on the water.
In the KART mode, a specially molded bucket seat is locked into the operator tray and the handlepole is locked down for an ultra-low center of gravity allowing superior cornering ability. The Seadoo 3D in KART mode offers an experience unlike any other PWC before it and is comparable to operating a performance car on the water. The characteristics of the KART mode garner tremendous confidence for the rider, as precise rail-like cornering is as easy as turning the handlebars.
Featured on Channel Five’s the Gadget Show and Men & Motors, the 3D continues to be one of the most popular PWCs of 2004 and looks set to attract yet more new riders throughout 2005.
For more information about the 3D visit London Boatshow Stand S2630 or www.jetsmarivent.com

4th January : Yamaha Launch new Waverunners on London Show Stand S2610.
the future of personal watercraft starts here…

The new 2005 Yamaha Waverunner line-up is yet another landmark in the history of personal watercraft development and as with so many other significant industry turning points, it is Yamaha that sets the pace once again.
It is the first time any manufacturer has launched a range where the latest technology four-stroke models outnumber conventional two-stroke machines. Yamaha has been the UK market leader for the past two years and is aiming for a third through competitive pricing and product benefits.
The incredible smoothness and sophistication of the four-stroke WaveRunners is well known and appreciated, as is the legendary speed, reliability and fun factor provided by earlier two-stroke models.
But two-stroke power is not about to be replaced, because with their ultimate speed and  performance, the Yamaha GP and SuperJet models still rule the race circuits of the world.
As evidence look no further than Nicolas Rius, racing for Yamaha, the 2004 European Champion in the Runabout Superstock class (riding a GP1300R), who was also placed third in the Ski Superstock (riding a SuperJet 700). But it’s not just the racers who want this sort of extreme performance, as these machines are still proving as popular as ever with watercraft enthusiasts.
To emphasise the point, the 2005 two-stroke GP1300R has new features and even more power – now 170hp.
Every year is important and exciting for the Yamaha customer, with new models and innovative features from the latest WaveRunner range.
WaveRunner FX, FX HO, FX Cruiser, FX HO Cruiser
Spearheading the 2005 WaveRunner range are machines that take the four-stroke watercraft concept to new heights. As its name implies, the FX HO (High Output) delivers even more power than the standard FX model, while its more refined partner machine, the FX HO Cruiser, can surely be described as the ultimate ‘sports-touring’ watercraft, with seating for three passengers and an impressive 100 litres storage capacity.
In terms of product development, nothing stands still at Yamaha – for example the hull of the FX HO designed for superior performance and speed, or the compact remote locking control unit. This not only disables or enables the ignition at the touch of a button; it can also activate a ‘Beginner Mode’ function to down-tune the power and performance capability, making the machine easier and more controllable for first-time riders or novices until they gain experience. Another press and full-on power instantly returns for use by the skilled rider.
All four models offer the smoother, quieter, more economical riding experience that is the hallmark of all the Yamaha four-stroke WaveRunners, the outstanding Yamaha MR1 engine providing the foundation for stunning acceleration and high-end performance that has proved such a revelation, even to experienced riders, on their first exposure to these class-leading watercraft.

Two all new WaveRunners: VX Deluxe and VX Sport
True affordability in four-stroke watercraft – that was the brief and that is what Yamaha has achieved with the launch of these two exciting VX models. Both are completely all-new WaveRunners, from sleek hull to compact power unit. And in typical Yamaha style, the affordability has been achieved without stripping away the performance of the clean, quiet, smooth four-stroke engine or compromising our legendary reputation for turnkey reliability. Put simply, these are well engineered, solid, stylish WaveRunners with two different levels of specification and customer appeal and with up to 50% of the running cost of comparative competitor models.
The Sport offers aggressive styling, exceptional performance and excellent all-round ability. Move up a level to the VX Deluxe and you get the same, plus the benefits of mirrors, reverse and remote locking security with innovative ‘beginner’ mode.
With these fabulous new four-strokes, Yamaha has simply confirmed its position as the undisputed world leader, not only in the personal watercraft market as a whole, but in the fastest-growing and most innovative part of the industry, the four-stroke segment.

WaveRunner GP1300R and GP800R
In terms of pure, out-and-out speed and performance handling, the stunningly fast, fuel-injected GP1300R – the world’s most powerful two-stroke production watercraft – is still the leader of the musclecraft pack! And it’s closely followed by its GP800R stablemate.
2005 sees a further boost to the high performance of the GP1300R – the combination of even more power from the engine and a new high output jet pump now delivers 170hp.
Offering a combination of performance, handling and comfort, the GP1300R and GP800R are excellent examples of the unmatched pedigree of performance and reliability inherent in every WaveRunner. These race-bred machines, with their surefooted handling and awesome acceleration and speed, have a dominant track record in international competition spanning many years, and the technical knowledge and experience gained from these racing successes is used to further develop the WaveRunner product line.
The GP 1300R features the very latest Yamaha Engine Management System (YEMS). Among its many talents, this computerised system controls and adjusts ignition timing, fuel injection mapping, engine diagnostics and off-throttle steering. This brilliant function activates when the operator releases the throttle lever but still needs to steer. So it helps the driver to execute a turn safely, even when decelerating.
The GP 1300R and GP 800R are definitely machines for the serious rider who wants a great-handling, powerful (and very fast) production watercraft.

WaveRunner XLT 1200

Yamaha working in partnership with professionals
Following a successful full year of operation the RNLI ordered a number of additional Rescue Water Craft (RWC) adapted from standard Yamaha XL700 WaveRunner Personal Water Craft for the summer of 2004.
The first RWC units were strategically placed during the 2003 season alongside RNLI lifeguards to deal with many incidents close to heavily used beaches and inshore waters in the South and West of England. Capable of shallow water and surf operation, these units go where traditional inshore craft are unable to operate safely at similar speeds.
Continuous daily deployment during 2004 at Poole, Bournemouth, Perranporth and Newquay has proved both efficient and cost effective with many rescues carried out.

3rd January : Shaken but not stirred.
Two brothers had to make a daring, James Bond-style escape seconds before the £1.5m yacht they were sailing exploded miles out at sea.
Jumping onto jet skis in the middle of the sun-drenched Mediterranean and speeding to safety may sound like the stuff of blockbuster movies, but for St Annes pair Greg and Ben Davies it was all too real.
Greg, 27, was skippering the 60ft superyacht Roxanne on a trip between Majorca and Ibiza when fire broke out 12 miles from land.
As flames quickly spread around the boat – believed to have been loaned to them by a lottery millionaire – the brothers realised they were unable to reach a life raft.
The quick-thinking that followed probably saved the brothers' lives. Greg unhooked the jet ski mounted on the stern of the vessel and launched it into the water.
He said: "We just dived in after it, clambered on board and got the heck out of there as fast as we could. Thank heavens there was fuel in the jet ski and we had the keys, because we only got away in the nick of time. Seconds later the yacht exploded."
Several fishing boats in the area attempted to help the pair, but were driven back by flames. The brothers were eventually picked up by Spanish coastguards who responded to their May Day call.
The brothers' father, local businessman Chris Davies, of Saltcome Road, St Annes, said today he did not know a great deal about the incident, but believed his sons had managed to escape unscathed.
He said: "I have not heard a great deal about it. But the boys are coming home at the weekend.
"As far as I know they are both safe and were not hurt."
Greg and Ben both live in Majorca, where Greg is believed to work as a freelance skipper.
It is understood that he is a friend of several celebrity boat owners who frequent the holiday island, including former Eastenders star Steve McFadden, TV presenter Anthea Turner and king of clubs, Peter Stringfellow.
The remains of the Roxanne, a Princess-built superyacht with three bedrooms, are now resting in 200ft of water off Majorca's picturesque south west coast.
The vessel was normally berthed at Majorca's glitzy Puerto Portal marina, the home port for an armada of multi-million pound yachts, dubbed floating gin palaces by locals.
Greg, who moved to Majorca seven years ago, is a qualified yacht master and a popular skipper-for-hire with many of the holiday island's wealthy boat owners.
One colleague said: "Greg is very much in demand as a yacht captain.
"He's very experienced and a really nice guy, so it won't be long before he's back on the water again in another superyacht."
